Just what we were looking for. No fuss no frills. Could possibly do with a little more love but that would probably up the price and everything else. A big thank you. Well now. What a lot to sadly say about this course.. My friends and I were very much looking forward to spending the afternoon at down royal club as amateur players, some of us playing at a novice level. There were a few things that we thought that we could look past, right up until that moment when the managing member of staff had decided that he was going to berate myself and my colleagues. We had gotten halfway round the course, and this gentleman had decided to approach us and started shouting towards and at us from about 20 metres away, shouting incoherently as we approached the clubhouse, shouting at us that we needed to be faster, and that we were holding people up on the course, and that he’d had 4 phone calls from golfers naming us specifically. This was complete and utter nonsense. Two groups of three players with me will attest to this. Anybody who was coming up anywhere near close to being behind us we graciously offered the space for them to go on ahead, mostly in consideration to the fact that they were probably better golfers than we were. The manager, then decided to change his story and said that it was only two phone calls this time , and started telling us how this was and not monopoly. At this point, my friends and I were starting to get a little bit narked off because he had framed himself up in telling lies, exaggerating, and making out like this place was actual heaven on earth. The actual truth of it is that I have never been to a course that has as much litter on it , shredded bottles, shredded metal cans, other players using marijuana on the course, and probably the most disgusting of which is that these toilets in this particular course are nothing less than absolutely vile. I actually almost would have preferred using the bushes. The holes in the course from badgers actually caused me to trip and fall at one point, as they are often covered over by grass. One of my colleagues carts wheels got stuck in another. The greens are in terrible condition. The smell of those toilets is ridiculous , it is clear that the toilets haven’t been scrubbed or washed, or maybe had any attention paid to them at all for quite some time, and also the walls were filthy, with actual grime built up on the walls. I do not think that I have ever been to sports facility that has been any more embarrassing and as dirty as this has been . It is truly shocking that the gentleman managing the area would come out and start to berate us in such a manner for being a little less rapid round the course than the professional’s that he clearly expects should only be using his course. Perhaps the people he SHOULD have been berating, would have been those who should have been cleaning the facilities. My view is, that when he gets his house in order, possibly hygienic… … then and only then is he positioned morally to come out and tell us how wrong we are. The actual facts of it are that we were exceptionally gracious to other players on the course, and also none of us at all believed anything that that particular gentleman said as he kept cancelling out his first claims with new claims. He’s no idea how many other golfers were so publicly mocking him on the course this afternoon. In addition to that, the gentleman is bringing nothing but disrepute to his house, as many other people walking down the course were very well aware of how he had spoken to us, and they were apologising, most of them stating that the guy is an absolute idiot and they didn’t want us thinking poorly of the course. What sort of an idiot was running this facility today?? Nothing but an embarrassing situation for what we thought was a good course. In the winter, this course is a hidden gem. While others closed, in bad condition or waterlogged swamps Down Royal remains in good condition. Yes in the summer it's not comparable to top courses, but it is a good solid course with value for money and plenty of challenge. Can be very nice but poorly maintained, especially the 9 hole which is disappointing Friendly staff which were very helpful! Greens were in great condition, fairways and tee boxes varied. Course is dry even with a lot of rain over last couple of days. Good challenge, especially with the wind getting up! Pace off here is something different like. 1 ball after 1 ball, doesn’t anyone have any friends anymore ? Honestly as 3-4 ball you’re gonna have the worst round you’ve had in years! On course conditions it’s honestly -1 star, not a single level tee box or removal straight flag. Also watching the maintenance team jump off the side of the tractor and kick your ball outta the way fairway is crazy, never in my life have I seen that! Tho on the up note the horse racetrack which the course is built inside off getting watered as you on a surface dryer than sun itself! Worst course I’ve ever played on, in horrible condition. Was looking to try another course for a change of scenery and it was terrible. Payed for 18 holes, played 3 and walked in. I believe other golfers infront of us took the same approach. Greenkeeper was actually changing the pin location as we were about to hit our shot onto the green!!! Would not recommend. Played 18 holes today, firstly I would recommend everyone to stay away from this course. £25 to in what I would describe a farmers patch. The fairways are like rough. The rough is overgrown grass. The greens are incredibly poorly maintained and have seen tee boxes that better. On top of that the pace of today was horrendous with being stuck behind a 4 ball of snobby members who couldn’t hit a drive more than 150 yards and then thought they would wait for greens to clear. I honestly couldn’t warn you more to stay away! Travel an extra 10 min down the road to Edenmore for an extra £5 with excellent conditions. If I could give this zero stars I would!
