Upon hearing that I'm of German origin, the young man behind the bar gave me a Nazi salute. Inconsiderate, rude, unasked for, those words are not enough to describe how wrong that is. There's no greater offence he could have come up with, he should've rather insulted my mother. In Germany you can get straight up sucker punched if you do the Nazi salute, rightfully so. The young man continued to be rude to other guests as well in the time I was there. He's ruining your reputation. We are pilgrims along the Camino de Santiago and decided to take a short rest in Ventosa. We are so glad that we did! We had a nice rest in the shade at La Mieleria with a coffee, water, and some other pilgrims. We were then greeted by Alvaro who was offering us to taste raw from local bees. It was out of this world good! We chatted further and he explained his passion for bees, their preservation, and immense value to the ecosystem beyond production. His goal is to make people more aware of these great animals. This was discussed over a sample of some fantastic mead (see the photos for the types we tried). They were very distinct from each other and delicious! Absolutely worth the brief detour off the "main" Camino route even just to stop at this cafe. This is the perfect oasis to stop at along the camino. The hidromiel (mead) was delicious and packed a punch. The colombian man working (I think his name was Justin) was incredibly kind and created a beautiful atmosphere. He also showed us the bees and explained the process for retrieving and pollen. I hope to return someday on my next camino. Absolutely wonderful place to stop while on my camino. La Mieleria and their workers are beyond friendly and their passion for their work shines through. The was excellent and we got little tastes of everything. I recommend the yogurt with and bee pollen! I didn’t have any food but I did have a tasting. Delicious! Marco the bartender was full of personality. We loved him! Very special honeydew drinks here. They generously gave me a taste of every single honeydew drinks they have and let me decide which one I like the most. Very lovely drinks which are sweet with a bit of bitter taste which I like. Would love to visit again! The biologist who shared his knowledge about and the process of making it was amazing. What incredible service! Marco was really fun to talk to, we tasted the and got a ice cream, everything delicious. Thanks to Marco for the atmosphere he was able to create, it was a very pleasant siesta!
