Mina de Peña del Hierro

Campofrío, Spain Mine

A very interesting decommissioned mine. The guide was very helpful and chatty. The mine is very small, you mainly only cross one tunnel to reach a big water pond. I was disappointed as I was expecting to see more of the mine, some narrow tunnel etc... it is not really worth it, I would rather recommend the train ride fron ríotinto. Still the water pond with red water due to the muneral is interesting. Narrow tunnels have been flooded naturally, so you can only see an entrance that gives you an idea of how nrrow it was but you can not go down. You can buy a ticket for Peña de Hierro in the mine park of Riotinto and... you should! It's an amazing place with an interesting history (recently, NASA scientists paid a visit, for example)! you have to visit it! Highly recommended the visit to the mine, pity that the tunnel was close, but great views of the "crater" of the mine and the colour of the rocks shaping it. Interesting add-on to the Mining Museum in the village of Rio Tinto. Nice walk through the old railway tunnel to the flooded quarry which is about 40 metres deep and filled with highly toxic water with a PH of about 2.1, plus totally contaminated with Heavy Metals which the acidic water has dissolved naturally. This contamination is a natural occurrence, not just the mining activity and has turned the the Rio Tinto River very red. Only micro-organisms survive in the river as they live off some of the mineral oxides. NASA visited and studied the whole area for about three years prior to making the journey to Mars as they think the occurrence might exist on the Red Planet. Very interesting. Unique environment. It is a nice place, however I would not say that visiting the mining tunnel (and paying for it) is a "must see". I would anyway recommend to have a walk in this area enjoying the nice views to the mine.
