You can walk around and walk along the old bridge, which now serves as a decoration and a landmark. It is still worth paying attention to this place. Claregalway is a beautifully restored 15th-century Norman situated on the banks of the Clare River in the village of Claregalway, County Galway, Ireland. It is one of the few surviving examples of medieval tower houses in the region, and is now used extensively as a cultural and historical centre. Historical Milestones • 15th–16th centuries: controlled by the Burke clan as part of their extensive holdings in Connacht. • 16th–17th centuries: the was involved in numerous local conflicts and changed hands several times. • 1651: probably damaged during Cromwell's campaign in Ireland. • 18th–20th centuries: fell into disrepair, used as a barn, then as a ruin. 🔨 Restoration • In the 2000s, the was purchased by Dr. Eamonn O’Duane, a doctor and enthusiast of historical architecture. • A major restoration was carried out, which took more than 10 years. • Today, Claregalway Castle: • has been fully restored; • is used for exhibitions, concerts, educational programs and weddings; Beautiful grounds. Usually have 3 or 4 festivals each year and many open days. We went during heritage week and it was a free tour including the roof top. Nice walk along the adjoining river to finish off. It is also possible to book an air b n b on the grounds and there for a night or two. We in the Abbey Room (1st floor), and it was our favorite in Ireland! The room had amazing views, heated floors, both a nice soaking tub and a shower - so nice! And the host, Gerry, was wonderful on all fronts - extremely friendly, helpful with delicious suggestions for dinner, super knowledgeable about the history of the property & castle, and he even made us teas/coffees during our stay!! We cannot recommend this place enough! We were visiting from the US and here for a few nights of our trip and was by far the best place we at during our trip. We in the farmhouse and it was very nice. Owner was very friendly. There was a culture event on here at the time of my visit. There were a lot of stalls around and plenty of entertainment. grounds were done up beautifully and added to the atmosphere. Well worth the visit. The tower, with all of the suits of armour, ancient weaponry, and interesting furniture and fittings, is completely accessible. Wonderful place. Lovely, helpful staff. However, I would suggest that they have a think about the breakfast they offer. There's definitely room for improvement. There's not a ton of choice. Especially for vegans. Convenient for Galway, we took a shuttle bus to the races. Good restaurants locally (by car). I definitely do not regret visiting. Combined with the ongoing exhibition of exotic flowers, it made for a pleasant trip. However, we could see only a small part of the tower itself, and on its own it was not that impressive. The and its surrounding buildings have been restored with skill and care, so you get all the creature comforts of the 21st century without any compromise to the noble vibes of one of the most story-laden castles in the country. On a practical note, it’s also a beautiful base camp for exploring the city and county of Galway — the city is a very short drive away. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was magical—stepping into the felt like being transported back in time. The beautifully restored rooms, the enchanting medieval ambiance, and the warm hospitality made our unforgettable. Everything added to the romantic and dreamy vibe. It was the perfect setting for a special celebration. I was so impressed that I brought a book from Claregalway back to the hotel where I work, so I can recommend this incredible accommodation to our guests visiting Galway. Spent my 50th birthday July 23 on site of my family’s historic home.. as the first Galway Burke in many generations from Northen California to visit ,I am biased. my first 24 hours I was to over whelmed to enter the castle.I sat in the courtyard having a beer just taking in the smells, light rain and beautiful exterior of the castle! . The pride of the masons who tirelessly restored this treasure , the owners commitment to perfection and the community’s support all deserve praise! the staff was more then amazing the accommodations extra special! I felt special spiritually and physically connected. I walked across the highway to see the resting place of my great by many years/ generations grandfathers resting place at the church.
