Probably our favourite pub in Buckinghamshire! It’s been recently refurbished and they’ve done a brilliant job. The setting is lovely, nestled at the start of the Chilterns with a gorgeous view out over the back. Love their newly refurbished garden, especially when the sun is out it’s a spot to eat or drink. Food is too, can’t fault it! Really warm and staff, we’re always greeted with a smile. The GM Alan is a guy, always up for a chat. There’s loads of car parking down the back too which is ideal if you’re meeting friends or family. Definitely going to keep returning! Enjoyed a couple of pints of beer in the garden. The whole place has been renovated beautifully and the is and professional. A few noisy kids around. Food slightly pricey, but ok for restaurant prices. Wine prices shocking, £30+ for cheapest bottles and rising steeply for decent stuff. Hope they do well. We’ve enjoyed this pub on occasion for years, but hadn’t been in a while and they’ve had a proper revamp. It’s still the same pub, but now they’ve made it into the best possible version. Exceptionally nice decor, with incredible attention to detail. The food is even better than it was before, and they have a really range of beers on tap, including a really 0%. The are all great. It’s also big enough pub that if a bigger party is in, it’s not going to affect your dining - you are cocooned from the noise of others, thanks to all the nooks and crannies separating the different areas. The were professional, warm, and incredibly helpful, making the all the more enjoyable. But the true star of the visit was the food — absolutely amazing! I savoured every bite of their Sunday roast, and it was nothing short of impeccable. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth decadent, the piping hot gravy was rich and flavourful, and the Yorkshire pudding was light and fluffy — perfection on a plate. And don’t even get me started on the roasted potatoes — golden, crispy, and seasoned to perfection! We went there for Mother’s Day. At £40 per person, plus a cocktail and a bottle of wine…..£190 Party of 6 plus toddler for Sunday lunch. We were greeted at the door warmly but told we would be squeezed onto our table which isn't really the most welcoming way of introducing the restaurant. Menu was mainly roasts and a few extras, selection was pretty and what youd want from a nice weekend pub visit. Fish and chips, burgers, pie etc. Prices all over £20 for roasts which is not uncommon for these parts but for that price I was looking forward to something exceptional. The non items were frankly astonishingly expensive, £18.50 for a burger and £19 for fish and chips is madness despite how often I see these prices. were very and orders were taken, food took about as long as you would expect for a busy Sunday. I had the pork belly roast, first thing I noticed was the flaccid wilted watercress garnish, both unnecessary and un-appetising. The foundation of a is the potatos. The should be fluffy on the inside, with a crunchy exterior, neither of which these sad spuds could even dream of. There was no evidence of the accepted gold standard these days of par boiling then roasting in plenty of fat. They were hard, pale, and dry, I've had better for half the price. If a kitchen can't a potato I question whether the chefs know what they're doing or they just don't care. The pork belly was another disappointment. This is a cut that is either pure indulgence or just bad. A belly should melt in your mouth, you should almost be able to cut it with a spoon, and should be under a crackled skin that shatters on impact. I was served a tough rectangle of pork, fat left flabby and unrendered, and just plain disappointing. This again shows a lack of care as to what was leaving the kitchen as pork belly is incredibly forgiving, all it needs is heat, salt, and time, a long time, and it will reward you with succulence which was sorely missed. The apple sauce that was supposed to come with the pork didn't until I asked for it late into the when someone finally checked on us. Mushy peas were also missing from the fish and chips. Additional points of criticism are that children's food was brought out last rather than first which would have been a nice touch, the beautiful bathroom was marred by a tap hanging off its fitting, table being cleared while people were still eating, an electronic tablet was presented to us to give feedback rather than the actually talking to us, a long, really long wait before we could get anyone's attention after the mains to request dessert menus, another long wait for the bill, cauliflower cheese was dry and undercooked, arctic roll was hard, child's pizza that looked like they were running out of cheese, grey beef with no hint of pink, I think that's everything. For a pub that has clearly had a huge investment and looks fantastic inside and out, the food and did not live up to this cozy but classy finish. More attention should be paid to the quality of food than the designer bathroom wallpaper, pure style over substance. I could forgive many of these faults in a pub that charged reasonable rates but this really should have been exceptional, instead it was weatherspoon quality with Michelin prices. I booked this restaurant for my Nans birthday along with my Grandad, Father and immediate family as I live locally in Penn. Hearing the establishment had recently been refurbished we were keen to try the new venue. Unfortunately I couldn’t have been more disappointed and shall not be recommending to others. The was very slow throughout due to understaffing. When our meals finally came out no veg and a missing chicken didn’t come out until we asked for it and things were starting to go cold. My father’s burger was disappointing and looked like a kids from McDonald’s for £18.50!! He spoke to the manager and his response was “ that’s how we make it “. Everyone was uneasy throughout the meal, which was the polar opposite to how we imagined it would be. I have read the bulk of the reviews there is a clear transparency in all of the things above. It’s on you to thrive or survive. People will pay money for quality, they won’t forget a bad experience. I looked around the room and there was a real unrest in there faces that they had had a very similar experience. Highly recommend this place. We had a surprise 70th here and the were amazing. We had a private area with open fire. So cosy. The waitresses were so polite and lovely. The food was and the manager checked in on us to make sure we were happy with everything. The dinner was very and the desserts were so beautifully presented. All very delicious. We had such from Kingsley nothing was too much trouble. The pub has been beautifully renovated. We had a family lunch (plus dog) at The Crown last Saturday. A really welcoming pub with log fires and gorgeous new decor. We were served by Kingsley who was charming! was great, food was fab. Definitely going back soon. Claire We came on Saturday for a 70th birthday dinner that was booked around 8 weeks in advance. All of our food was preordered about a week before the date with a £100 deposit paid. All I can say is, what an utter disappointment. Our table was booked for 6:45. At 7 we were still waiting as the table wasn’t ready and hadn’t been cleared. This made the “surprise” difficult and we had to delay arrival so we could decorate the space. They knew we were doing this as had spoken about everything previously. 35 minutes after everyone had arrived I had to go and find someone to come and take our drinks order. I was told they had forgotten about us as we were in the crown room and they don’t usually have diners in there. We had to chase up someone to take an every drinks order we had. Infact, every time we needed something I found myself wandering around trying to find someone as no one was around at all. This was even more annoying as the pub/ dining area wasn’t even buy- in fact it was pretty dead with only a handful of tables occupied. Our food, although pre ordered didn’t arrive until an hour and 40minutes after we had sat down. The children were getting really cranky as they were so hungry. It was now about 8:40pm. The portion sizes on the meals were to be honest an absolute joke. I ordered an adults for the oldest child as he has a big appetite, but even the 7&9 year olds were left starving by the minuscule kids meals. The pasta dish was finished in 3 mouthfuls. We had to go and grab the kids a McDonald’s after we left as they were all still so hungry. A kids should be big enough to fill a child older than 7!! It also didn’t help that we also had to send meals back as they were wrong leaving us with an even longer wait and everyone eating at different times. The adults meals were also incredibly small, the steak in particular. You could tell by the cut and markings that one steak had been cut into 2 separate pieces. We asked if this was correct and was told this is a common complaint because the steak is ridiculously small. The deserts also came out with the wrong ice cream. (Sticky toffee, should have been cornflake but came out with banana which just wasn't a nice combo at all.) I felt so sorry for the front of house guy who dealt with us. He had clearly taken the brunt of a lot that evening and couldn’t apologise enough, he was embarrassed by the we had and fixed our bill accordingly- which was appreciated, but didn’t change the fact that a 70th surprise had now been ruined and put a dampener on the whole night. Some of the servers were very and attentive, but others lacked warmth or communication. The biggest issue though was of drinks. Ordered prosecco, which was first delivered at room temperature rather than chilled. The replacement was chilled but flat. The coke also was flat. We had to ask 3 times for tap water for the table. Just all quite poor. The food overall was although my wife found a stray chip buried in some mayonaisse they brought out that left us wondering whether they were recycling. Real shame. We had a time last year and it wouldn't take much for this to be great. Just needs taking in hand a little. From the moment we got in touch, the managers with whom we were liaising (Daniel and Irina) were extremely kind, understanding and helpful in organising the event. And thanks to the efforts of all the at The Crown, the event went very smoothly and many of the people who attended commented on how well organised the event was, how efficient the were, how nice the venue was, and how the food was. All the we dealt with on the day were extremely friendly, efficient and attentive. The Crown did a job at arranging and hosting what was a very personal and emotional event.
