Auchindoun Castle

An interesting history and the views are fabulous on a clear day! It’s a little bit of track and hilly to get to it, but it was worth the walk. It’s unmanned so go whenever you want. There are spectacular views from the as it is up on a hill. Incredible! A rather short from the parking area with plenty of signage to keep you on track. I can't even describe the feeling of walking around the ruins. Just incredible! Auchindoun, aside from being hard to spell, was one that felt like "if we are nearby, we'll stop", even though we had it on our itinerary. Once again, the countryside was beautiful as we drove through. Unfortunately, the official parking area for the is about a quarter mile down the road and with our older father (76), this would have been a show stopper. However, since it was basically after hours (though there are no posted hours for this ruin), we drove up to the homes at the gate entrance and parked there (not sure we were supposed to!). This made the approach manageable for dad, and we all got to explore the ruins. Vistas, arches, green countryside, a ruined 3-story tower in the center, it was all pretty amazing. Amazing ruin, with quite a hidden and rough track to get there. The car park is small, 5 cars max and there is a short to the itself. It's free to enter and has stunning views surrounding the itself, great spot for a picnic when the whether is good! Once you’ve negotiated the (very) rough track from the main road, and parked your car, the up to the is great. The itself is up on a hill overlooking a beautiful glen. The ruins are not extensive, but are bonny and the setting is secluded and peaceful.
