And if you were quiet and the dog still for a moment, you'd see them the silver flash of a salmon, a king returned to his kingdom, leaping the falls in a great arc of light and purpose. It minded you of the old, wild world, before the towns and the noise, a world the dog understood in its bones and you in your heart. A fine, free it was, with no fences to hinder a beast's spirit. He drank from the clear pools and came back to the path with a stick, his eyes bright with the goodness of it all.
