We drove a long way and the weather was bad, so we arrived after it had closed for the day. It looks very interesting though, and I hope I’ll be back in the area someday. WOW. It was the predominant crossing used during the days of the DDR for people who were driving to/from Bundesrepublik Deutschland & West Berlin. The museum exhibitions are fascinating. So much of the outdoor facilities have been restored to their prior condition. The facility is a massive complex, and is organized in a way for people to 're-enact' what it may have been like to go through customs when entering the former East Germany. There are also very solemn and sad sections that are dedicated to people who were murdered while trying to escape the DDR. Overall, this is a fascinating historical site, and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would! :) Went to this place late in the day but was escort off by a security woman who told me no video only photos which I found a strange rule with todays cameras taking fast photo which is like a video asked why replied due to propaganda. She was very pleasant and informed it close at 1700 so my fault. I have been here many times before when it was just abandoned but now they are looking after it and turned into a open museum. I will be back with to take it all in and have to reflex on what it represents. This is an impressive place and a very nice exhibition. I didn't expect to spend so much here. I definitely recommend visiting. There is a free admission and you can take a brochure with a map that guides you around the with 25 stops. There you can read information at panels and learn about all phases and aspects of checks that were going on here. You get to know what it was like to cross the even if you just travelled to West Berlin. Unbelievable. A really impressive and extensive with loads of exhibits to see from its as the sole road crossing between East and West Germany, including a variety of former checkpoints, offices etc, a watchtower and the large and well presented main exhibition spread over two floors. I arrived at 3.45pm thinking that would be plenty of time, but when the indoor exhibits closed at 5pm I still hadn’t seen everything - you could easily spend two hours wandering around. There’s also the section of preserved fence down the road at the Memorial Hötensleben, so for anyone with an interest in Cold War history it’s well worth making a stop in this area. + Free entry + free parking (at the rest stop) on site. + Bilingual (German and English) text provided at (most) information boards. + Numerous outdoor and indoor exhibits to explore around the checkpoint grounds. + Many buildings well preserved and still in original condition. + Very insightful interactive displays covering aspects of GDR/DDR history, occupied territories, checkpoint procedures, escape attempts, former guard interviews (quite riveting), and reunification in 1989 (to mention only a few). + Highly recommended for an original, up-close experience of German history! sehenswert. Makes it very easy to go to. Also, it is one the very few sights in Germany where they have an english translation for their content. Данный комплекс следует расценивать как исторический экспонат ...Историю к сожалению не перепишешь и все события и явления в ней имеют причинно-следственную связь.
