I was shown around by a pleasant volunteer who was very informative and showed me the equipment and clothing they use. I've never been so close to the RNLI before and seen an insight to this highly appreciative and worthy organisation. Great station, very professional volunteers, amazing and inspiring to see in action. 👏👏👏👏 Appledore Lifeboat Station Situated on the north Devon coast, Appledore Lifeboat Station operates an all-weather Tamar class lifeboat and an inshore B class Atlantic 85 lifeboat. Lifeboat crews have been presented with 30 RNLI awards for gallantry and 4 foreign medals. Key facts about the RNLI The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives. Lovely old building set at the top of a long slipway into the estuary. Lovely town of Appledore as a backdrop with great eating places for all your holiday shopping needs. John's is a great place to shop for all your provisions if you're planning/doing self catering. 😀 . The locals take great pride in the place. All the buildings have recent paint and the streets are very clean. Life passes at a very leisurely pace. Great chat with one of the duty staff, their 200 th birthday this year. Sad to say it looks like it will also be the year they have the most call outs. We parked in the main car park in Appledore. It's good to know that there are toilets in the car park and the car park is free after 6pm. It gets very busy in the evenings as Appledore is very popular with families crabbing and swimming when the tide is in. We walked towards the children's play area and walked up a little ramp to some beautiful narrow streets where the houses were painted in many different pastel shades. It was not too long a walk before we ended up by the RNLI base. The tide was in and it's a lovely place to sit and watch the gentle waves or to watch the boats sailing by. There were some people in the water swimming or on body boards and we had a great view towards Northam Burrows country park and Crow Point across the water. A brilliant celebration of Appledores' 200th anniversary ❤️ everyone enjoyed the time spent with the crews and volunteers. Safest place to swim when the tide is coming in The lifeboat ramp. Easy access and clear water. Completed charity walk, great team here had a tour - Thanks !!
