Tough but worth it This is a I have wanted to do for a long time, and it was really nice. From getting off the boat to the summit was 45 mins and it was incredibly busy almost a long line of people. We came down the others side and then walked around the lake via the hotel. We do a lot of walking so found this quite easy but people of all shapes and sizes and ages were doing it and enjoying it but there are some scrambles as you get to the top. But the are worth it. Lovely all the way up to the top and back down again. Fabulous walk. Went up via the main & down via Derwent Water. Parked at the Lingholm Eastate car park. £10 all day (includes a money off voucher in cafe). This is a very popular Lake District fell. It is in close proximity to Keswick, and can be reached from there by foot, bus (to Hawes end), or via the steamboat on Derwentwater. The main is a clear path, with a steep ascent to start, plus a couple of small scrambles nearer to the summit. A good introduction to the Wainwrights for kids (age 3-4 upwards if they are very active and can comfortably 4-41/2 miles. It’s also manageable for anyone who is reasonably fit and active, although the scrambles can be a challenge. It’s extra walking to go round the lake either via Lingholm , or to catch the steamer back across to Keswick. It’s always a busy route, but from the top are stunning, of Derwentwater, Skiddaw Blencathra, Newlands valley, and up into Borrowdale. Quieter is down onto Catbells terrace, this is a steep ascent/decent with some wooden rails in places. Breathtaking views. Took the up the side rather than the tourist path, so a steeper climb. Went on to Maiden Moor, High Spy, Dale head, Hindscarth and Robinson. Completing this anticlockwise might be easier and you have the of the lakes for more of the route. Leisurely stroll it was not especially after rain. 2 particularly tricky climbs but well worth the effort. Pricless, you need to get away to these places more often. Fantastic views, not too complicated hike, climb is steady pretty accessible from all sides. There is a bit of a steep climb but nothing too bad 4year old and a dog managed so no issues:)) The ONLY issue will be parking you either lucky and park close by or there will be a bit of a 😉 So we walked this in the rain, it was alot harder than we thought it would be. I strongly recommend traversing along the valley to the west of catbells heading towards little town. You pass right under the mountain before ascending and coming back on yourself to get to the summit. A much easier with less tourists. We descended the main tourist over the scramble section. In the rain this had turned to ice and was really dangerous even with boots and poles. We had to shuffle most of it on bums. We saw people with trainers on and silly little wind cheater coats. They looked freezing and kept slipping one nearly went over the edge. View was special even in the bad weather but climbing (and it is a climb) catbells is dangerous and shouldn't be attempted without strong boots with ankle support, poles and suitable waterproofs. A lovely in a beautiful part of the world. It's nice but not as easy as they tell you there is some really steep climbs. Tried this with a couple of senior dogs and a pup and surprisingly they did amazing. The little scrambles near the top were abit challenging holding 3 leads and getting myself up on the same trail but once you get to the summit part its wise to take a left just behind the fence and do a longer ascend then cut across back over to the right and the dogs should be able to manage alot easier. I took a few breaks as I didn't want the dogs to struggle and give them time to relax and it also allowed me to enjoy the views. There's so much space for picnic or rests out the way of the so it's a very good walk. Everyone was really friendly up and down the trail. I started from the car park side and there's so many spaces up and down the roads, I arrived around 1400 on a Sunday and it was not busy in the slightest. You can do a lap to the summit, continue without turning around and head down an easier decent although you might need a hiking stick and stop the knees from wobbling haha. You can then finish the along the lake, make sure to follow the road back to where you parked as I took the following others and realised I were heading back to the village so promptly turned around. 2hr for anyone doing it pretty non stop and 3hr for having plenty of rest but not having longer then 10mins here and there.
