The construction is very similar to baths in Rome. There are quite a few Roman ruins and temples in the area that are poorly indicated on maps. For example, a Google search doesn't indicate that this is a Roman ruins, and none of the other ruins in the area appear either. There's work yet to be done! We noticed a stretch of sandy beach and a path heading in that direction and decided to stretch our legs a bit. After a short walk down the path we stumbled upon the ruins of a stone house that turned out to be a 2000 year old Roman Bath house. Lunch was forgotten as we spent the next half hour with the place all to ourselves. It is a beautiful scenic spot that is steeped in history. The French government maintains the place and have installed a couple of informational plaques on the hillside above the site but nothing invasive. After the Roman's abandoned the area, local fishermen lived in the building until about 1500 years ago. Most of the original building and the villa that would have accompanied it were scavenged for building materials over the centuries. But you can get a feeling of life in this remote spot as it was thousands of years ago. No road signs, no tickets and waiting lines, no concessions or gift shop. Just a bit of history waiting to be discovered when you wander away from the tourist sites. Nice easy 10 minute walk from the free car park. Well sign posted to the Roman Bath house.
