Good fun climbing up the stairs of the old castle. Good for kids who were dressing up in medieval costumes and sword fighting. We went as a group of four. Absolutely loved it, it's fantastic. Particularly, that visitors are able to wander freely, scramble over masonry and climb towers. There were two towers to climb, made safe for people to do. Really unusual and amazing to be allowed to explore it like this. The welcome from the entrance lady was very warm and friendly, with such excellent English language which helped us because we are rubbish and have so little French! It did really make the visit more special. The surroundings viewed from the towers are lush forests as far as you can see, beyond the river valley below. Spectacular. I think the main courtyard would be accessible to a wheelchair user if you wanted to negotiate the rough track down from the car park. But its downhill, bumpy and then you'd have to get back up. There was a chain across the path to the possibly to prevent cyclists but perhaps that could be moved. Great place to visit (and the dog loved it too). The staff were really helpful and friendly. Very interesting history and wonderful to see restorations still ongoing. Great value too Architecture: 5/5 Excellent. I absolutely loved all the surviving Medieval architectural ruins. You can see some really evocative 14th and 15th century pieces such as the two surviving towers. Service: 5/5 Excellent. Victoire de Rougé, the new châtelaine of Tonquédec is kind, polite, and professional. You can tell she really takes an invested history of the château, its history, and its impact on visitors today. She even personally staffs the small snack kiosk inside the château grounds to ensure her visitors have something refreshing while exploring her family’s ancient grounds. A true gentlewoman. Ambience: 5/5 Excellent. Imagine fusing Medieval history with modern urban exploration (urbex) to create a sense of adventure. You are permitted to wander and discover hidden rooms, hallways, and views. You see a sudden perspective and gasp from the sheer beauty of it. A truly evocative location of a lost time. Cleanliness: 5/5 Excellent. No trash, no graffiti, and well maintained grounds. The toilettes were respectable and so were the picnic benches and eating area. Family-friendly. Value: 5/5 Excellent. At € 6.50 per adult, this place is such good value for money. I spent three hours here photographing all the different perspectives. A casual visitor can be expected to spend 60-90 minutes exploring the different areas. Overall: 5/5 Excellent. History, architecture and nature create a very dynamically interesting location. A beautiful place hidden away. Very friendly smiley staff and a wonderful insight into medieval life by the enactment this weekend. This place is a nice big ruin where you can walk around freely. It is good maintained and some support or stairs were added to allow access to some towers. A few rooms have some furniture to provide a view on how those rooms could be used when the was still in use. At the entrance you are given a paper with some information about the different parts of the castle. Luckely when I visited there was also some entertainment provided in the form of reenactments and the firing of the canons and other weapons. You could also try shooting a bow or a crossbow. At the entrance there is a display of some equipment (weapons, armor, shields, pots and pans) that you can look at Lovely chateau built to keep out the Vikings. Cheap to get in and the lady in the ticket booth spent a long time time giving us the history. Enjoyed by our whole family from 20 months to 73, especially the 5 year old.
