Great hides but no red squirrels this time. Woodland walk closed due to fallen trees courtesy of Storm Eowyn Very pretty place. Lovely woodland walks. Well laid out, lots of info boards, clean and tidy and a real wildlife haven. Loved the memory garden too what a nice idea. A Beautiful with very informative display boards regarding nature. Pretty much every native tree you can think of, is planted here with signs to help you in case you do not know what the tree is. Overall a really nice and well kept after reserve, possibly my favourite so far. Absolutely fantastic reserve. Super well maintained and clean. Free gravel parking lot. Great hides to watch the and they have bird and squirrel feeders. Lots of signs explaining plant/tree species. Animal ID sheets in one of the hides. We saw soooo many it was fantastic! Lots of new species we haven't encountered yet while visiting the UK. We only saw one gray squirrel. Great trails. Would visit here daily if I lived in the area. Eskrigg is a fantastic hidden gem at entrance to lockerbie from the Dumfries side on the left, it has amazing plants , wildlife ,and trails. Plus has squirrel and bird hides which we have been lucky to see several times. There is also the main information centre that is also a huge looking onto a large lake that has loads of bird species to watch and the centre has a vast amount of leaflets ,posters ,binders, and collections of local fungi etc that you can pick up. It gas maps for the amazing forest walks located afew hundred yards from the centre which are well kept and beautiful all year round . There is also a toilet if you need to go as it is pretty out the way ,there is a medium sized car park at the end of a bumpy farm track. Love this place A quaint with an abundance of wildlife, including red squirrels! There are two main hides, one of which overlooks the pond featuring waterfowl and a red squirrel hide, which attracts numerous garden and squirrels. On our Sunday visit, Eskrigg had some traffic, but overall, it was quite a quiet reserve! A nice day out for visitors from both far and close. Nice very well kept, no red squirrels on the day of my visit... Lovely reserve, very well looked after by dedicated volunteers. Great asset for the community 👏 A well kept with a good variety of species of birds. Busier as the day goes on so if you are after some peaceful birding an earlier visit will probably be in order (like most places). Also keep your eyes peeled for red squirrel in amongst the woodland walks. Fantastic little to walk around and so many different types of loved it A lovely quiet walk Eskrigg has always been a cherished sanctuary, It’s peaceful, full of life, and a real treasure for anyone who enjoys nature. That’s why it was heartbreaking to visit recently and see how much of the woodland has been cleared. The trees that once gave this place its calm and character are now gone, leaving open spaces that feel exposed and empty. I believe the recent changes may be due to damage caused by severe weather. If that’s the case, I truly hope there is a clear and effective plan to restore the reserve—whether it’s through replanting trees, rehabilitating the landscape, or allowing to slowly recover on its own. I’ve kept this as a five-star review because of how special this place is and the hope that it will return to the peaceful haven it once was. Many of us care deeply about Eskrigg and want to see it thrive again. Some reassurance or updates on restoration would mean a lot.
