Opted for a change this time and had fish, scampi and fishcake which I'm afraid to say we're very bland and like something you get in the frozen isle in Tesco. Was quite dissapointed :( We absolutely love this place. It's a coeliacs haven. So much choice and exceptional food. Always a welcome. Knowledgeable mature hard working staff. Beautiful surroundings with plenty of in and outdoor seating. Dog and lots of parking. Definitely worth the 40 miles drive 🚗 👌 Went for lunch visiting from another area. The reason we went out of way to get here is that I'd read about the pub in the fictional story " The Widows Club" by Amanda Brooke so I was keen to try it. Sadly I was a bit disappointed, it was fine and the were but with high hopes it just underwhelmed me. I think they are struggling to recruit kitchen ( looking at the adverts) and it seems to be a standard soulless chain pub with accompanying garish chart (10 yrs ago) overly loud music. My Tikka Masala was fine, comparable with ( and maybe was!) a microwave meal from a supermarket own brand. My husband's vegetarian filo tart was overcooked, dry and tasteless. Accompanying boiled potatoes were good, however the were undercooked, more than I'd expect had green/black bits that I'd throw away at home before putting on someone's plate, they were some of the worst pub I've had. You order your food/drink at the bar instead of service. We didn't stop for pudding. I wouldn't go back again really. It was fine/ok but not the treat I hope for from a good pub lunch. Just called into have a quick bite to eat and a drink, Sunday afternoon. Quite busy and sat down in available seats. Didn't realise dogs were only allowed in bar and were politely asked to move and were directed to a free in the bar. Guy who I think likely to be manager very polite and friendly. Ordered food and a and really enjoyed our time there chatting to other customers and staff. It was my wife's birthday and it was great. Thanks for a great service. We were setting up a horsedrawn funeral and she very kindly allowed us to use her car park. We did have food as well which was Had a meal with some old friends on a Saturday lunchtime. There were probably at least 20 choices on the menu including light bites and baguettes. We had fish and chips, tuna baguette and steak baguette, all were good sized portions and very tasty. The young lady who served us was very attentive, friendly, polite and helpful and put us at ease. There was a nice calm atmosphere inside and as I was leaving, I noticed a lot of people enjoying a nice in the beer garden. Thankyou. Called yesterday (15/05/24)seemed rather hectic.One chef and one waitress on duty,asked for menu and waitress said would be 10 minutes because she was on her own.Felt sorry for her as she was rushing everywhere. Asked for fishcakes with and mushy peas.Got fishcakes with fries and salad,oh well.Manager finally appeared from upstairs.Would I go again..NO. I used to come here years ago and they did the best fish and chips. I went recently for a birthday celebration and the fish and wasn't on the main menu, but as a 'small bites' dish. I ordered it, and what I was served was a frozen fish that I wouldn't even give my cat. It was disgraceful. I was very disappointed. Visited on Sunday gone, service was quick and pleasant, food was lovely. Thank you to the server Ian for creating a afternoon for us all. I visited The Childe of Hale today with a friend for lunch. The welcome by the manager was warm and friendly. We ordered the Scampi and the Hunters chicken. Both were well portioned, perfectly cooked and presented, hot and very deliceous. We had soft drinks, but the aray of beers, wines and spirits on offer were very tempting. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. The cleanliness of the premises were top. I would like to say how grateful I am. I had 'organised' a large group walk for the lighthouse trail and decided we'd have tea at Child of Hale pub afterwards. I say organised loosely as it grew quickly from 8 to 18 people from nice idea to let's just do it next Sunday with the more the merrier attitude. I realised, even though. Id not been here before that was his was likely to be problematic as it's not a huge place, and it's popular. I called on the Friday to see if I could reserve a for 12...hoping the other s could book for themselves. Sure enough too many to accommodate at short notice. But I secured a for 8. The other four secured a separate but wasn't guaranteed to be seated in same area. Then another 4 friends secured a and the last two also secured a table. So was very very pleased we all would get a meal after our walk. The walk ended up shorter with the rain and some just stayed in the pub for a instead until we got back. But to our grateful delight when we did. We were told all 18 of us where seated in the same area 😁 Was so happy as the point was bringing all our friends together. And though the walk didn't come off quite as planned , we got what we truly wanted, the association together which the made possible. I had a roast chicken dinner at such a reasonable cost. Based on the recommendation of a neighbour who had been there for Sunday lunch, my mother, sister and myself visited the Childe of Hale around 6pm on a Friday, and based on the rating it had been given expected better than the average it was. With only two front of house it was just as well that it was not busy, though we did hear someone advised that there would be a 30 - 45 minute delay before they would receive their meals, which considering they are, like the pub itself, only average is not a good sign. If you want a basic gastropub then visit the Chile of Hale, however, if you want good quality food, and atmosphere there are plenty of better establishments.
