Update summer 2024: we wanted to go again with friends, so we called the telephone number and left our names & date at their voicemail. When we arrived there a few days later it seemed the didn't arrive, as the lady said at the entrance we should have sent them a sms message ???? Really?? We were with only three adults and one kid, there was a lot of space at that early time 19.00 hours, but no mercy: we could absolutely not eat that night. So we left. Quite frankly: we are disappointed. The whole process was really unclear to us. Would have been much more client friendly if the crew would have found a spot for just three people and a kid, although the went wrong ... Advice: double check if the has arrived properly. Advice for the crew: please make it more friendly and clear how to make a reservation. ****** Very nice surrounding in the Ardennes and a very special interior of this unique restaurant. The menu is very tasty and with local ingredients of the season. Absolutely subtile yet stunning flavours ... This is a difficult review. How to tell you about this? Everything is super. A one of a kind experience. First of all, you need to want to go to Tchar Scaille. The road is long and rather narrow, we went there in a storm. Once at the location you find rest in different kinds of ways. It's lonely up there. Which brings us to the second part. Who the hell starts a unique over there! Once in, passing 2 big but friendly dogs, we feel home and welcome. No menu card, just an explanation of what is going to happen. 'we all eat the same, one menu and it's a surprise'. It brings a special atmosphere. Every guest is watching when the next plate comes in for another table. Everyone was relaxed. Our dog and 2 others were welcome, everything was calm. The food was special. A lot to choose from and more than enough. I really think it's a bargain. What brings me back to 'who the hell!' well it must be people with a mission, dream and vision. Tchar Scaille Menu To experience the base of the cuisine that dominates the fine dining world, my wish was to include rural France within our holiday. We never could have anticipated though to stumble across a that does rural, traditional food like Tchar Scaille. It is situated in the middle of nowhere after a bumpy ride through the woods. As soon as we started doubting if there would even be anything, there loomed this distinct building and a packed parking lot. Walking up to the entrance, antlers as door handles welcomed us into the world of Philippe, the owner and creator. A huge part of the experience is the entourage. Pagan depictions of demon-like creatures dancing on the walls, big wooden tables and Philippe himself as if he just walked out of ancient Gallic times, Tchar Scaille offers a complete world to submerge in. The dining concept is simple: there is one menu that everyone gets. You can choose between red, white of rose wine and there are several beers. The price is very reasonable, especially for the quantity you get. The food was just amazing. It felt as if we sat on the table with the popular cartoon character Asterix, enjoying food that could have been made by the historic peoples in the area. Each course consists of multiple dishes, and although rustic, plated with care. The starters already looked amazing. We were most impressed by the mushroom filled with mussels. Wow, were they packed with flavour! It set the bar high for the rest of the menu. In the main course, we were blown away by the zucchini and mushroom side. How can these humble products be so nourishing and satisfying? Also, the stewed onions with cider and currants were deliciously umami and wonderfully sweet. As our meats, we got French pork and salmon trout. They must have been cooked over fire, because they were perfectly smokey. Everything tasted so good and there was so much of it, that we had to recuperate for a while before asking the dessert. The big wooded board was once again filled with amazing food. My favourite was the melon with merengue and absinthe. What a meal! For me, this place alone is worth driving to the French Ardennes for! Amazing restaurant, totally unique experience and amazing food. The dining room is a work of art in itself. Brst thing to do in the area by a mile! Great location and hosts, excellent food!!
