Don’t miss it on your visit to Alençon! really cool place. i never knew the history of lace, nor that had such a strong history in Alençon. just as note, only the 2nd level had english translations. we used google translate and typed in certain things we were interested in learning about that didn’t have translations! the tour was self guided. As a maker I was delighted to visit this museum this afternoon. The section is on the 2nd floor and is beautifully curated. The film, that shows on a loop, has English subtitles and shows how the is made. All the items displayed also had English labels, thus the experience even better for me, as my French is rather rusty. Learning that 1 cm square of would take about 7 hours, and seeing the women on the film painstakingly some lace, has convinced me that I will stick with the bobbin I make! Needle is not for the faint hearted. The museum is worth a visit. But I'm not sure that in 2021 all the same exhibitions. 1. - masterpiece work, Alençon was so famous for them. 2. Pictures art are quite good even for non-experts. 3. Good brought from Cambodia by the colonists. (the most amazing collection). Much more interesting than I'd expected. The section was quite amazing, with good bilingual explanations (needed due to the specialist vocabulary used!) Magnifying glasses provided to view the incredible detail. Some good works of art: don't miss the rather moving nativity tryptic in Pre-Raphaelite style. Very interesting exhibition, beautiful paintings exhibits Little museum with alot to see. Loved the Alencon and Argentan Lace. Amazing….all handmade needle lace. Good explanations in english and exquisite samples. Downstairs paintings. Well worth a visit. Small museum but interesting collection. I especially enjoyed the temporary exhibition about wooden lace. A lot of activities for children. Most impressive: a person showed how to make and answered questions. A camera filmed her working and projected it on a screen but it was still hard to follow her needle, I was fascinated by her skill! I enjoyed watching her work. Most signs are only in French but important information is given in English. The person selling us tickets spoke French, English and German, super nice. Displays of of the most astonishing quality.
