Very nice place and free! About .50 miles/800 meters up a decent path, some loose gravel but not much. The ascent takes about 25 minutes of casual walking. Very beautiful scenery and you may even get right up next to some cows. Old bunkers, maybe, near the path as well. The site itself you have to use your imagination on, they have outline and signposts telling you what was supposed to be. Antonio wall is maybe still there, not sure...there is a ravine and some rocks that look old...but 1800 years old I cannot say. You should come here though to experience a piece of history. There are no staff members or building here, no toilets or cafes here as well. Great place for a picnic! Nice easy walk, took my 3 year old he was fine. There is 2 ways (maybe 3) to the top of Bar Hill, one is a gentle incline with the other, which we came down, very steep. Lovely taking you through the farmers fields then the woods and then onto Barr itself, some great well signed points of interest on the walk, which could be done quickly if no breaks. View from the top was exceptional, I was lucky it was a nice clear day, had a picnic then ascended the slope, the are absolutely unreal: You can see all Campsie Glens and facing Croy and Roman Fort. Interesting with informative displays, accessible via a 1km from the nearby Auchinstary Quarry. The route is buggy friendly for the most part, if you follow the military way rather than the paralell (but much steeper) Antonine Wall, though we did unfortunately encounter one locked gate that we had to lift the buggy over as the adjacent kissing gate was too tight to maneuver through. Good interpretation boards and decent spot for a walk. Not to far from the Forth and Clyde Canal if you up through Twechar. Need a 2km sloped since the closest place where you can leave your car. No entrance fee, neither timetables We parked at a small industrial complex in Twechar and followed the sign from the road. It’s a good uphill ascent on a farm track that gets quite steep, go through the gate and keep going uphill. You may get a visit from the cows going home as you go through the field. At the top of the field turn left off the track, through the gate and up to the wood. Enter the through another gate and you can see an info board. It can be hard work to get there but it’s worth it. It would be a great place to take a picnic. Explore the area and enjoy the peace and quiet. There are info boards to read and some small sections of architecture to look at. The best by far, are the views, stunning. Great place to learn about the Antonine wall. Always interesting to see the Roman engineering in the bath house. Well worth a visit. Nice up the too and amazing from the top of castle hill. Does exactly what is says on the tin. It's a hill, and it's a Great walk. Simple to start up the road and through a few walking gates. In the actual monument area you have two choices at the sign for Bar by the ruined, overgrown cottage. Right up the past the sign is John Muir way which takes you down then up the hill. It's quite with a v shaped ditch on the right. Boggy at bits in the middle but good fun if steep. Did I mention steep? Very and I'd advise uphill if it's snowing unless you like butt-sledging. Leads all the way up to the iron age fort. Then to the Roman fort. Left at the sign takes you up the straight military road with a smaller part way up. Easy to with lateral bumps to make it easy to up or down. Leads up to the Roman straight ahead or to the iron age to the right. Lots to see in the Roman area but didn't get yo see it all due to the Snow. If you're with wee ones, give yourself 3 hours for the and explore. Miejsce z historią. From the not so hidden passage leading to Bar Roman Fort. up following the sight and direction of John Muir Way. This will lead you to B802 finally, cross the road turn left you will be soon arrived Auchinstarry. Follow the canal your on the way to Croy. Cross the Forth & Clyde canal, turn left again. Follow the canal at about 40 minutes time you will arrive Twechar again. A nice up a for about 10-15 minutes brings you to this fort. Great across the landscape shows why it's position was chosen Surprised at how beautiful the whole place was. Easy to get to and well worth the journey. Parking was a bit tricky as I had to park in an industrial estate but it was early so no businesses were open yet. Stunning and several recognisable ruins and foundations.
