Salles is a nice French town but I would not recommend staying here. The houses vary too much in comfort and maintenance and the entire park missed the opportunity to enter the 21st century. It's all there and it has a lot of potential, just needs effort and some investments, France Comfort! They charged me an additional €270 before I even moved into the house, claiming it was for bedding and cleaning—things that are typically included in a hotel stay. They also charged me an extra €60 for bath towels, which is absurd; I could buy my own for that price. I definitely do not recommend this place. It’s better to stay in a hotel, as you’ll avoid these extra fees before check-in. For that price, you could stay at a 5-star hotel. Ne me dites pas que les frais était normal et attendu . I am writing this review to give other potential visitors to Chateau de Salles further insight into the resort. We first visited in August 2019. We found the houses basic but comfortable, the outdoor furniture was old and needed replacing. Overall we liked the resort so planned a large family holiday there this year. We were disappointed to learn shortly in advance of our departure that the on site was closed for the season. We were not made aware of this when we booked. I felt this should have been flagged. This was a big disappointment for us. The in our view was the beating heart of the complex. Night and day during our last trip the and pool bar had a lovely holiday buzz about it. It was a very social area that made you feel good when you were around it. When we arrived this year at the resort our eldest daughter remarked it looked like a ghost town. To be honest i felt the same. The table and chairs in front of the area were still there but a lot of them looked like they needed replacing. Some of the planters were collapsing and the olive trees looked unkept. The pool bar area was very untidy with an old tatty tarpaulin covering the disused stacked bar stools and tables. In our view these should have been moved elsewhere as it really detracted from the entrance to the pool. The pool itself was fine. The staff have opened a timber shed to sell drinks and snacks but this shuts early 9pm, and only opens late afternoon. The staff are friendly but i feel could do more to compensate for the being closed. There were a few entertainment nights on the complex which were ok but the staff failed to clear up fully after these events and litter was evident in the area when walking through the next day. The grounds of the complex were not as well kept as in 2019, lots of dead leaves visible and the grass needed cutting. Our villa was very nice and well equipped. The beds were comfortable so no complaints about our accommodation. Salles itself is a sleepy village with not much going on. The beaches are at least an hours drive from the complex. The traffic this year was very busy, in 2019 the beaches were a 40 minute drive. This was very frustrating. Forget about visiting the Dune de Pilat unless you are first there, horrendous queues. Our holiday requirement was for the family to meet up and spend time together, we rented 3 villas. The villas were conveniently located which allowed the young children to run freely between the houses. From this aspect the venue was a success. However a lack of restaurant, untidy grounds, distance to the beaches and the price of the resort would prevent us from booking again. Overall i would say we made the most of it but came home feeling disappointed. We will not be returning. My advice to the staff and France Comfort would be the following: 1. Open the and pool bar areas again. 2. Maintain the grounds to a higher standard. 3. Keep on top of the litter after evening events. 4. Don’t charge guests extra for towels. 5. Don’t charge guests for the use of the tennis courts.
