What a great place, so quiet and peaceful and FREE to visit. No carpark and unfortunately none of the information was in English but hey that's our fault for not speaking German French or Dutch. Well worth a visit impressive views of the town from the top of the tower. Einen kleinen Besuch wert, im Dorf sind freie Parkplätze 3 min von der Burg Ruine entfernt. Zur Historische Geschichte der alte Burg,es war die Burg eines Ehemalige Kreuzug Ritters! Aus archäologischen Untersuchungen ging hervor, dass der Burgplatz bereits im 10. Jahrhundert genutzt wurde. Dort, wo heute nur noch die Burgruine steht, hatten die Römer schon ein festes Kastell angelegt. Die ältesten entdeckten Fundamente stammen aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, als die Burg dem Adelsgeschlecht „von Rulant“ als Wohnstätte diente. Im 13. Jahrhundert war ein Burgbering vorhanden, der von einem Graben umgeben war. In der Nordwestecke existierte bereits ein Turm. Im 14. Jahrhundert wurde der Bering neu aufgebaut und der Bergfried errichtet. 1148 wurden die Herren von Reuland urkundlich erwähnt. Ein Sohn des Walter von Reuland heißt dort „Filio di Walteri de Rulant“. Theoderich von Reulant nahm am Kreuzzug Kaiser Friedrich I. teil und fiel 1189 vor Akkon. 1313 starb das Geschlecht von Reuland aus. Doch die Burg würde noch über Jahrhunderte von anderen Adels Geschlechte weiter geführt, mit mehr oder weniger streitereien bis die Burg 1794 durch ein von französischen Truppen gelegtes Feuer zerstört wurde. 1830 wurde die Anlage auf Abbruch verkauft und gelangte in den Besitz der Familie Mayeres in Reuland, die sie später an die Gemeinde verschenkte. Die Preußische Rheinprovinz führte 1901 bis 1902 erste Restaurierungen an der Anlage durch. Der belgische Staat kaufte das Burggelände im Jahr 1923, um darauf eine Luftabwehrstellung zu bauen. 1986 erwarb er auch die Burg, die 1980 unter Denkmalschutz gestellt wurde und seit 1988 schrittweise restauriert wird place, free entrance Mooie burcht. A very looking ruined castle at the top of the village! It's free to go to but it isn't that spectacular, worth it if your also going to go to other places that day. There was a part where you could go underground and that was nice. A one time visit is enough. But it's with plenty of information boards! Unfortunately the visitor center was closed. Also it is unclear where one can park when visiting. The castle itself is very atmospheric though, with mysterious 'tunnels' and a lot of interesting information signs, giving background of the various parts of the ruin. Minpunt: parkeergelegenheid. Plan your parking in advance. There is no parking near the castle. There is a parking close to an ATM machine & from there climb up the roads to the castle. It is free and you can go on top of the tower. No parking close by, so consider taking a bike or to go a bit hiking.
