Amazing walled city with great walkability. Beautifully intact and improved over the centuries. Not a lot of tourism infrastructure (shops, restaurants, etc) which I think is a good thing. It's a real town that people live and work in! Really beautiful town never heard about it. Not that famous in Portugal. I love it that it looks like a dutch fortress the thick walls which you can drive trough with the car. You can have a lovely walk over the walls. Quite lively people on the terraces I loved it with my family spend around 2 hours. Of you plan to go here also visit castelo Rodrigo An exceptional place, a lot of sympathy in its people and on this date watching the reenactment of the Siege of Almeida is a unique experience in Portugal, it is already the second year that I come to the event...With free access, traditional games for the whole family. Demonstrations of what was done in the past and at the end of the day we are surprised with a memorable event of the best I've seen so far... This year, in addition to the fireworks, there was a light show and lots of color with drones... followed by Mariza's performance, which was the icing on the cake...Very good indeed. I recommend warm coats. It cools down a bit as night falls. Rich in beauty and history. Highly recommended. And you can have an incredible meal at 1810 restaurant for 10 euros (year 2023) where you can eat everything! Amazing place stuffed full of history. We visited during a Catholic festival so streets were beautifully decorated with flowers and greenery. One of the most surprising, stunning historical sites of Northern Portugal, Take the time to explore the little military museum located within the walls of the town! An amazing place to visit. We stopped unexpectedly and so glad we did. Everyone friendly. one of the most imposing fortresses in Portugal that played a critical role in defining the Portugal of today. It is a pity that more efforts are not made to publicize it and invest in tourism.
