This is a beautiful place. The locals are very friendly and the cafe serves freshly baked traditinal cakes. The red wine is outstanding and only 1€ for a large glass! The finest example of a Visigothic cathedral on the Iberian Peninsular. The Celts Romans Visigoths Moors and Templars all passed through here. Idanha a velha has warmth, charm and big hearted people. The historical buildings gives an embracing ambience that will hold you for a very long time after your visit and many will be enchanted to return again and again. There is a quaintness about Idanha a Velha that eases the soul even though it has had over the years much bloodshed and sadness but as you amble through the dried up river by the stepping stones you would not think of that part of the history behind this amazing place. The azeite mill the great oak that sits on top of the old wall and the lovely cobbled streets will hold memories in your mind forever as will the lovely heartwarming people that you will be sure to meet along the way from the old Chapel down into the center and beyond. We will certainly come back here and soon, it has that calling factor, who knows we may sell up our farm in Cidral and move up here. One thing we do ask is this, please do not litter, use bins provided and if you love home made piri piri go buy some from the lovely lady that lives just up past the tourist information place. Enjoy your trip to Idanha a Velha, eat, drink and relax in the warmth of its atmosphere. A walled city with a long history. Only thing left of the Templar Castle is the keep. Some interesting buildings. Beautiful village with a nice local market every 2nd Saturday of the month! Just a really cool old Village from antiquity that a few older residents live in full of beautiful hollyhocks and roses just outside on Santo a really sweet little village there's lots of Roman ruins Gorgeous historic town. Well worth a visit. myth has it Portugals first king 'Bamba' was discovered here. Enchanting place :) After getting lost, we found this little gem completely by chance. Fascinating place with such a rich history dating back to the 1100s. It was amazing to see that the houses within the castelo are still inhabited by the locals. Definitely worth a visit!
