Nice castle, well kept and a great story behind it and it owners I don't know why this place is rated so highly. - The park/"garden" is a neglected mess, a basic public park looks better than this. - The inside of the "castle" 's furniture is mostly from the 50s or even later, again there is nothing special. - The guideing was just 2 uninterested bored teens opening doors and that was it. All of this was 5€/ person in the middle of nowhere. worth a visit! very beautiful landscape and castle.. the only drawback was that, since still undergoing restoration, no guided tours, or at least written information, was available. would have loved to know more about the story of the place and the families that inhabited it. Essential visit for those interested in Admiral Lord Nelson. This was given to him by the King of Sicily. Slowly undergoing restoration, there is plenty of interest on your self-guided visit to the house and garden. Fantastic place, and I was definitely amazed by the story of Nelson and his castle! The guides were very prepared! Being close to the end of the year, it was to be expected that the opening hours would be somewhat not adhered to. We roamed the seemingly empty grounds (garden areas) between 9:30 and 10:30. When we did finally see staff, we were informed that we were the first visitors and that the first tour would happen around 11:00. It was too late for us since we had to be elsewhere around noon and this required travel. Nonetheless, I recommend visiting the and catch a bit the Nelson-esque spirit that Mainace definitely owns. It was a very peaceful experience for us, even if the external areas were the only ones we managed to see. Even though Nelson himself never made it, I would say that this was definitely worth a visit. Highlights for us were the lovely old buildings still with period furniture, plus picturesque gardens and chapel, and an interesting history of how the estate was passed down through the generations. The multimedia presentation was perhaps slightly overdone, but nevertheless worth experiencing for the holographic presentation of Nelson himself with some very Italian characteristics! There was some further refurbishment in progress whilst we were there (April 2024) including some sculpture galleries - great to see the investment being made.
