Here’s an odd recommendation I’ll title “Best restaurant to visit on a weekend road trip in 300 kms.” This place is special and totally worth the effort. I’ve been visiting the Erlhof for over 20 years and it’s one of my favorite restaurants in Germany. Hidden in the woods in a tiny farm village of only a few hundred folks (and where every fourth person probably works at the Erlhof) it’s family run, totally local, and those that know travel hundreds of kilometers to eat here. Built up around a family butcher shop that goes back generations, all the meat is fresh and as local as it gets. Nice when you want to get out of Prague for a day. Suggestion - Go walk around Amberg, (this takes less than an hours - small town), spend a couple hours in the excellent Amberg swimbad, and finish up with a short drive out of town to the Erlhof for a grilled meat mix “giegenspis” (“hanging mixed grill for two”) and the “windbeutel” (lighter than air puff pastry filled with fresh whipped cream and strawberries) for desert. You will be glad you made the trip! Everything was delicious. Wonderful, friendly service. I had the wild cuts of meat with mushrooms and gravy, plus spätzle. So tender and delicious. And a dark bier. The cake counter did not disappoint. We ended up with two large slices of strawberry cake, plus one tart. Highly recommend stopping by for a bite to eat. Five plus stars. Very nice place, really good food. Also the beer 🍺 is super Simply amazing great food and atmosphere Fantastic food! Many wild options and unique takes on traditional German cuisine. The Helles is also amazing. I did not try any other beers while there, but I imagine they are equally good. The dessert options were very good and the Windbeutel is incredibly large and tasty. Best of all, the staff were very kind and patient with our group of 8, including 4 kids. I'm looking forward to my next visit. Food was delicious, great service and location Absolutely fantastic.
