Well worth a visit. Wow, the size of the salt crystals, 800 meters underground, the roller-coaster ride at 50kph through mining tunnels... Great way to spend an afternoon. The tunnels double as a fantastic subterranean roller coaster, great fun! 800 meters into the earth! A historical site that takes the traveler back to the past of a time when the Nazi's tried to hide the treasures acquired during WW2 (Gold, Paintings & Money). Did a half marathon in this mine and it was super cool! The staff was professional, friendly, fun, and always had safety in mind. A must see if you are interested about WOII and geologie, the last storage of the german treasures found by the Americans. The guided tour with trucks deel in the mines is inpressif Very fun to do! The guides drive you arround in open trucks, it seems like an underground safari. This combined with interesting info, a museum and a good dose of humor from the guides gives you a fun activity. In total you are doing a trip of ~20km at a depth of 500m, with various stops. It looks like they are driving fast, but it is part of the fun experience. I probably wouldn't recommend it to smaller kids (or kids that don't like amusements park rides). The elevator from the mine might look intimidating, and goes quite fast, but it accelerates very gently. One of the best attractions in Thuringia. The tour through the old mineshafts of merkers are a must see for visitors in the region. For approximately three hours the guides will drive you to the various points of interest where you can explore the historie of saltmining and the mining industry in thuringia. Also the experience of driving underground sometimes feels like riding a rollercoaster. All of this is complemented by a team of very knowledgeable and funny tour guides. I wouldn't have thought so myself in the first place, but this is really worth a visit. Almost Rollercoaster-like ride through the mines, a number of interesting spots with a good amount of information, really well done!!! Unforgettable experience. Strongly recommended👍🏽 A fascinating experience to be 1/2 mile underground, traveling by vehicle and to see the GOLD room, crystal caves and so much more. You MUST see it for yourselves. Well worth the experience.
