During my recent holiday trip to Winchester in the first week of January, I decided to visit Lugershall with my children. It proved to be an unexpected delight! The site exudes tranquility, is steeped in history, and offers an ideal setting for a brief stroll and exploration. The children were delighted by the opportunity to frolic & envision the castle’s former glory. One of the most advantageous aspects of the visit was the availability of complimentary parking at the castle’s entrance, which significantly enhanced our convenience. I highly recommend this destination for anyone visiting the area. The ruins are a delight to visit. There are a number of information boards on the site telling the history of the and it's Royal connections. Maintained by English Heritage, there is a small free car parking area a short distance away. The walk is very easy, less than 5 minutes. Thoroughly recommend a visit if in the area. Very tranquil and pleasant setting, extremely old ruins dating to the 11th century. Really enjoyed visiting, even though the weather was terrible .. very nicely kept and enough information with no cost. Parking at the start of the lane was handy .. only a small ruin but touching history is always great .. really impressed with whoever cares for this castle. Tucked away just off the high street in Luggershall is the castle. Built on the site of an old iron age fort, It seems this was primarily used as a hunting lodge in the 12th and 13th centuries. Then it was on the edge of a vast forest. Frequently visited by King John and his son Henry III. Very peaceful with lovely views over the surrounding countryside. There is a small parking area - a sharp turn off the road to get to it. A very short walk to the ruins. Good information boards. Worth the effort. A wonderful ruin. Low level so great for small children. There's no much there but if you have imagination you play all sort of fun games. A great little with enjoy visible history for the history buffs but also just a beautiful place for a walk with the dog. Lovely little ruins - easy 5 minute walk from free car park so great for kids.
