The tomb is topped by a large capstone, estimated to weigh more than 25 tonnes. The capstone rests on nine uprights and there is a curved, 15 ft long entrance passageway. Known as Arthur’s Stone, the Neolithic monument has long been linked to legend and literature, associated with Arthurian giant- slaying escapades and inspiring the Stone Table on which the lion Aslan was sacrificed in C S Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia. The site is seen as a northerly outlier of the well known Severn-Cotswold tomb Group of chambered tombs and one of five Neolithic tombs in the local area. Definitely worth a Stop, Great as well. A nice quiet place I was told about by my dad. Nice to come sit with lovely views, it is surrounded by fields 1 being mainly sheep but they are quite. You can see for quite a distance on a nice clear day, my only pet peeve was the single track road, in some places it was rather tight and with tight corners, best stay slow even though it say national speed limit 🤬 it's better to stay safe. I'm not a fan of these roads. Stone age burial mound now eroded into the stones that made it. The massive cap stone is still just about balanced on the supporting stones & you can view the entranceway. Stunning of the surrounding countryside. It's down a tiny road (don't try with anything bigger than a car!), with some minimal parking. Better to walk from the local village. Don't expect Stonehenge and you won't be disappointed! A fabulous neolithic monument. Definitely worth a visit. It's next to the road but there's plenty of paths for walkers nearby. Wonderful over over the golden valley. We’ve been meaning to visit Arthur’s Stone after we saw it featured on the BBC Two series Digging for Britain. Neither my wife nor I are historians but we do like to visit places on our travels. We arrived at around 09:30 on a Sunday morning and apart from a jogger running by we saw no one else for the 30 minutes that we were there. Definitely worth visiting and we left wondering just how our ancient ancestors from 5,000 years ago managed to build this. If, as a townie,you don't mind narrow roads with a promise of fabulous views, this is for you: the historic site is a mere excuse to come back up here for a brief encounter with this beautiful countrysite ( even the rain didn't make a big difference ...and there might have been a mysterious Heathcliff to round off a good day🤗)- worth a little detour!!
