Great walking over the limestone fell with excellent view at the top While staying in the area and as the weather was going to be cold but sunny we had already decided to have a go at this . We parked at the hampsfell road carpark as it's easier to start from there and we really didn't know what we were letting our selves infor. All I can say is it is well worth the effort and it's uphill all the way but the are wonderful and probably the best in the South Lakes . A good mix of coastline, mountains and forest. Definitely one 1⃣ to do !! Fantastic up from Grange. Part woodland. Lots of wildlife, limestone, surrounded by fantastic and scenery lovely on a clear day. Very cold and windy up there. Stunning from this view point over looking the hills & sea side. We used Komoot hiking app to get to the viewing point, was an excellent hike from Grange-over-sands. Beautiful fell. Limited parking in lay-by’s at bottom by grange golf club. There are a few different routes up & down. The main one up is very steep but it’s over over quite quickly. Great for dog walks and stunning panoramic of the bay and mountains. You can climb the Hospice at the top but steps are very steep. There is also a small seating area inside the hospice if it’s too wet and windy. The route I take is 1 mile up and 1 mile back (slightly different route up and down though). Great for dog walks and scenery but there are often cows and sheep on the fells so dogs need keeping under control. There are a few stiles to navigate so not a great for people with limited mobility. Beautiful of Morecambe bay, Grange over sands and some of the highest lakes peaks make this well worth the effort to get to the top. Walking from Cartmel there’s a few routes to choose from, the fastest being left out of the village up Aynesome road for a few hundred meters before taking a walled path on the right hand side towards a farm. This involves a moderately steep climb in places which can be slippy when wet but will get you to the hospice in 40-50 minutes. There’s a footpath through the farms fields but it’s not paved in anyway. When the climb flattens out near the top, head to the left to locate the hospice. The hospice itself is an old stone building built to shelter walkers, a steep staircase to the side of it leads you up to the roof where you can really appreciate the panorama. Inside the small building are a few boards containing facts and text of interest. It’s really all about the view from the top though! Do not follow Google maps to the 'parking area' as it is a little lane leading to a grass field. No private signs or closed gates but you will face and torrent of abuse from a female claiming to 'own this land'. We were cautious entering the field and simply turned around to look for a better parking space, then noticed the female so approached her for advise to be verbally abused. Such a shame to have a vile stuck up person like her 'looking after' that bit of land in beautiful area. Some friends and I were staying in Grange Over Sands. This is a local circular from the centre of town but we started slightly further up the hill. We road walked to the start and made it to the viewing point for sunrise but it was cloudy that morning unfortunately. Still a lovely walk. Relatively easy short hike with some areas that are more difficult Could be done in trainers but recommend walking boots Good little walk, nice place Can't wait to get here again.
