This place was known as The Coffin Route. The widest it gets is 30cm. Good luck to all because i was bouncing side to side to get through. Just kidding but it was very narrow at some points. Ah yes before i forget for those who don’t dare to venture down the there is a path to left to go around to the bottom. Beautiful round the woodlands. Loads of history and folklore around you. Lovely place to round and just think and be. Loved the history around it and the stairs themselves. Amazing scenery and old creaky trees. Lovely round. Easy path to follow with directions all around it. Just lovely, the view from sitting at the top gives you a great view of the estuary, Ambleside and silverside. The rock formation are really unusual and fascinating with plenty to see on the way up there not just one thing, on the whole I would definitely recommend the to the steps. A nice through the trees quiet peaceful. However I wouldn't recommend if you have mobility issues as path very uneven in places and in my experience getting to from beginning of it is a gradual climb. Sadly last part of path beat me and I never got to end. Really worth the walk. Interesting rock formation great views Lots of routes to choose from in the woodland around the so you can make circular walks. There are well signposted paths with good surfaces, although it can be slippery in some areas of rock outcrop if it has been wet. The views from the top of are well worth the gentle climb. Fantastic even without visiting the steps, which are extremely fascinating as well as the entire structure itself. Many small cave type entrances into the rocks if you choose to explore. England at its finest... 10/10 Beautiful place to visit for a few hours. Was a little difficult to find the path to as it wasn't well sign posted and the sat nav took us the wrong way. Definitely worth finding it in the end. Use to come here as a kid, used to live not far from here, love coming back each trip to see how many new coins have been hammered into the 2 money stumps using the local rocks. The bring back so many memories, apparently if you make a wish at the bottom, then climb the without touching the sides then your wish will come true and you'll meet a fairy. Well signposted once you find the footpath from one of the main roads in either direction. We parked in Beetham village and walked up. After seeing the we climbed back up the hill and counted five buzzards circling overhead. A perfect, atmospheric end to the walk. We completed a 6 mile loop to the steps, starting at Sandsides. Up through the beautiful woodlands to Beetham fell, Whin Scar and onto the steps. We came back down through Underlaid woods, which had some more carved into the limestone, to Hazelstack tower. We then went through Teddy heights woodland towards Storth, crossed the main road and got onto the footpath that runs alongside the estuary back to Sandsides.
