Fantastic to the coast and of scafell pike from the top. There is limited parking and its a popular hike so arriving early is advised, the Wlna Scar car park had spaces when I got there but was full when I left. £4 for 4hrs £8 for 8 hrs. I did a circular doing the old man and Dow Crag which is easily done in 4hrs if your a regular hiker. If your on a family day out I would take longer and soak up the spectacular scenery. Took the route on foot from Coniston, up the road next to the Sun Inn to the beginning of copper mines valley, strike off left here up to the old mine workings on the Eastern side of the Old Man. We chose to continue along the skyline and do Brim Fell and Swirl How before coming back down the valley between Swirl How and Weatherlam, until we reached the edge of Levers water. Then followed the clear path down into Coppermines valley, back to the Sun Inn for a pint or two with most of the other people we’d met up on the fells that day! The hard route on a windy and rainy day and with little visibility is NOT for the Infloooooooenzas or the lesser experienced ⛰️🫣🌧️ Lots of people who swarm up from Coniston and continue back down. Luckily there wasn’t that much litter left behind, but given the winds on the day I did the loop over Brown Pike and Dow Crag to the old man, it wouldn’t have stayed up there very long 🤣⛰️ Quite steep, lost the path in the snow at the top for a bit. Wonderful views. Amazing full-day hike in early June! Uncrowded during the week as our group of 9 made our way up one side and back down the other side. Pack some extra layers and bring plenty of water! While it was hot and sunny on the way up, it was cold and shaded and super windy on the way down. First time doing the old man of coniston, it's such a lovely hike, steep and a leg burner on parts but overall its not a hard hike, and you get the most lovely when you reach the top 😍 I got lucky with the weather to! Was such a hot sunny day. Can be challenging in parts climbing up to the top but the are awesome, 360° at the top, also has lots to see and explore on the way up in the old mining buildings and caves. We parked at Walna Scar and took the steep climb up from the car park, the path at the bottom left. It takes you up past a disused quarry, low water (glacial lake) and then up to the top. It's a rough track, rocky steps all the way but we took it steady and it was fine. Absolutely worth it for the amazing views. We looped back via goat water which is an easier but longer walk. Across a ridge at the start then descend rocky steps to goat water. From there down it's a fairly easy on a rough track. We took it steady and had regular breaks plus a long stop for lunch so it took us around 6h in total, 3h walking. Excellent on a winter's day in February. Brilliant and not to hard of a ! We went a little further around and turned it into a 10 mile taking about 4 hours . Not to difficult and my two girls of 7 years and 9 years old did it not a problem and our little dog loved it to 🥾👣 Really nice hike, amazing views. Harder than I thought it would be, mainly due to heavy rains and winds, great and interesting old ruins near the top that were cool to look around Very hard for beginners A lot of sharp rocks Really tough climb and can’t even see anything at the top.
