Our next visit was the Archaeology Museum which had various unearthed streets and buildings from the late Roman period, all in a custom designed building. I think it was 2€ each which was a real bargain as there was lots to see and excellent English descriptions of all the displays. The information boards went right up to the present day, showing the development of the town and port. It is always great to come back to Via del Portico to discover new stories. This time one in our group explained the process of adquisition of the property and the deals to convert this basement in a museum. Two more floors were added to the building. I travelled to Sagunt from Valencia but I didn’t manage to visit this site since it is very poorly managed. There are a few guided visits per day which cover this site and the other Roman site closer to the train station. There is no possibility to make a reservation directly but you are supposed to call the Sagunt tourist office. Unfortunately they do not answer the phone at the indicated opening hours. When I went to the museum directly at the time of the first tour there was light but the doors were locked and nobody answered. This made this a very disappointing visit. It is the pity that’s been it’s often better in advertising it’s rich heritage then end making the visita worthwhile. Honestly wow. It's the ruins of a whole early Roman town. Very cool & only costs €1 per person. Not much signage outside, but the Google pin will get you there fine. The best Roman ruins in the town but poorly promoted. 1 Euro entry. Incredible road remains. Don't believe the timings on Google maps and check it out. This is a historical place whereby we experienced the Roman's well preserved ruins close-up. Entrance charge €1/person The placards placed at each ruins are written in both Spanish and English language. Both the staff/ guides were very helpful in explaining the highlights of the ruins in English. Absolutely brilliant!!! Unbelievably this doesn't seem to appear on "things to do at sagunto" searches but it was fabulous. I saw it on Google maps as we were having lunch and thought it sounded interesting but Google maps said it was closed. We wandered over anyway just in case and it was, in fact, open! This is an archeological dig within a building and is so beautiful and extensive. The information is excellent. We were blown away by it, and it was free! And to think that a few decades ago it was covered by a football pitch! I definitely recommend this. Great exhibition. Only 30 mins or so but worth the visit.
