Brilliant country park near Newtownards that incorporates Killynether woods, Scrabo tower, the south and north quarries. There's good free carparking that has the woods on one side and the and quarries on the other side. It's possible to do a 35 minute circular in Killynether woods that takes you to a small lake and back to the carpark, but it can be rocky and steep in parts. The is a 10 minute steep from the and is an iconic building with great of Strangford Lough. I would recommend the 50 minute return from the to the north quarry, which has a narrow entrance between rocks and feels like a hidden valley. It's easy to spend 2 hours walking around the woods, and quarry. There's toilet facilities at the and picnic tables at various points in the park. There's an information board in the with all the walks details. My first time here, although I had visited the forest walks previously but oh my! What once at Scabo Tower, just breathtaking. The day I visited it was raining intermittently but that really did not spoil anything. You can have clear from Scrabo on a good day looking over Helens towards Scotland, and the opposite direction the Castlewellan Hills and Mourne Mountains. Beautiful sunrise over Strangford Lough or Loch Cuan in Old Irish is a sight worth getting up early to witness. Below to the right top corner of the Lough is Rough Island reached at low tide by a raised pathway but be careful not to get caught out by the incoming tide. Ask local people anything about Rough Island will be met with a blank expression as it is universally known as Island Hill, the historic common name probably because it is an Island with a bit of a hill. It is also an ancient neolithic settlement where flint arrowheads can be found if you know what to look for among the flint shards. Behind Scrabo Hill and is Killynether Forest with various natural walks of differing difficulty as the forest is set into the hillside. Enjoy a relaxing day and take a flask of coffee or bbq picnic in the walled Garden or numerous picnic tables with bbq safe fitting and fireproof bin. Please make sure your bbq has burnt out as you don't want to risk this lovely park. Lovely place for a walk, trail can be quite steep in places and has a few large rocks/steps along the way. We weren’t sure if we hiked the entire length, but the were spectacular. A short climb to reach the Scrabo and the were amazing.
