This is an amazing walk! You pass by high trees with enormous ranked steams, while you along old and new water supply pipes between heavy rocks. There is a little river running down the valley, which you have to cross a few times. On the way, you will find small bathing places below huge trees. In my opinion, it is best to start at the first sign to the valley if you drive the road from Zarkos to Kato Zarkos. After the sign post showing "George", drive the road down to another sign which leads to the right. Once on the gravel path you can drive about 200 m further down where you will find a small parking space. From here you will reach Kato Zarkos in approx. 2 hours, depending on your speed. This is a really beautiful canyon/ ravine/gorge. I would recommend parking nearby the minoan Palace complex and walking up the ravine for about 2 mi or so and then return. The path is not steep and very well set up but it is rocky and rough in places. The sides of the are spectacular and change in the sunlight as you up the gorge. They're a remarkable large caves up in the walls of the canyon. Great Hike, rugged scenery. Not too difficult. Took us about 70 minutes to through the from entrance B to Kato Zakros. Some nice Tavernas at the end for refreshments. There is a bus a couple times a day to take you back to your car or there were taxis. We chose to back which was also not too difficult. We walked from Zakros beach up the hill towards the Xeropotamas gorge, which gives you 360° views. The uphill is marked with red dots on rocks; not always that easy to see, but you'll get there! The Xeropotamas ends up in the Dead Gorge, which you follow then right back to the beach. We preferred to do it this way instead of going the most used way to enter the Dead more inland, and return via the road. This loop took us 3hrs 30 minutes. We started from the beach and turned around about 2.7km in. Great scenery but keep your dog on the leash because wild goats will make it go crazy 😂 Lovely, peaceful and relaxing walk. Start at the beach and work your way up to the mountain village. ~ 2.5 hrs round trip. There were lots of flowers, butterflies and goats when I visited. We did it from the very beginning in Kato Zakros to Zakros, and back. Easy hike, nice nature, even on a hot day it is managable. Take enough water with you and you can refresh yourself in Zakros as well. The end of the is through olive fields and it is nice 🥰. Funny fact: we went for orange juice to Hotel Zakros (rooms and restaurant) and when we asked for toilet, the owner said: room 105… 😂. The whole place looks like from the 80’s and reminded me to the movie Psycho 😱😁. Forever memory 😊. When we git back to Kato Zakros, we had lunch in Akrogiali and it was super delicious 🥰 We started from the beach in Kato Zakros and hiked a loop which took us around 4 h. First we walked through the and then didn’t go up to the entrance in Zakros but instead continued towards Xeropatamos and came back to Kato Zakros over the hills where we had beautiful views. We sometimes lost the marked path on the way but always found it back thanks to gps.
