A spectacular large site spread over a mountain. The remains have an interesting history and are decently preserved. The views of the valley from the top are breathtaking. At the entrance there is a welcome place with toilets. The paths to the are easy and paved with large rocks. The paths to the outside churches are rocky and challenging. For the latter, proper boots would be better than trainers. The walk to the outside churches takes about 15/20 minutes. The walk to the takes about 10. Free entrance! The as some interesting church's and an amazing view. Also the lady working there is very nice and will guide you through the castle. Among the greatest surviving fortified cities of the late byzantine period, Geraki is a captivating site. The homes and the walls of the lower levels are quite heavily damaged, but still provide a clear and impressive picture of what this great town looked like in its prime. The citadel is in much better condition and offers very impressive sightseeing along with a spectacular view to one of the most productive olive groves in Greece, the source of the wealth of this once thriving settlement. Easy to reach but somewhat challenging to visit, as the uphill incline is quite steep, but fortunately, not too long. A steep climb but worth a for the spectacular views alone. An interesting archeological castle, it needs some additional work but still recommended to visit. We got a free private tour of three of the churches in the area by the guardian lady. On top of the mountain there is a very nice and quiet location for a picknick. We arrived today and it was closed. In google its says open. ATTENTION! A wonderful place but make sure that you call before you get there to make sure they are open. In many cases, the area will be closed and you will just waste time getting here. I am posting a photo with the phone numbers. The site is supposed to be impressive, the overview is amazing. Unfortunately it is poorly run and not managed. We tried to go there for 3 times over the years, despite being declared open in advance it NEVER was. Sometimes there are construction works sometimes the entrance staff is on spontaneous holidays. If you are still willing to test your luck and are not successful in visiting the take a drink on the nearby beautiful town square which is the only reason why this place deserves more than one star. We had a great to the castle. The lady at the visitor centre was very helpful, showed us a short introductory video about the history of the site, gave us a map and off we went. I had emailed them a few days prior to our to check on opening times and days and had received a very prompt reply. For some reason Google will not allow me to put the email address here but if you look through previous posts you will find it on photos of the signage at the entrance. They don’t open every day. We had the whole site to ourselves and enjoyed every moment exploring the three churches that are open to the public as we meandered up the hill to the remains of the castle.
