Amnissos beach

Heraklion, Greece Beach

Top-rated.online cuts through the clutter, highlighting only the reviews that are most helpful, earn the most likes, or come from the most active contributors. Great beach, sand, shallow waters. Sunbeds and canopies available, as well as showers and cabins. The beachbar however has terrible food, worst pizza ever eaten. This is one of our favorite beaches near Heraklion for several reasons. First, the historical significance of this former port of the Minoans makes the place fascinating. Second, not so many people know about this sandy stretch and its crystal clear water. Once the site of several impressive Minoan buildings, Amnissos today is a great to escape the crowds, for sun tanning, and for swimming. I go here frequently to visit the ruins and to gaze out at what must have been an impressive port thousands of years go. Highly recommended. It would have five-stars if not for the airport being so close and the planes. Nice beach. The planes landing in Heraklion in Airport, or just in front of you which is a kind of nice. Nice bar. Crowds easy to look at. But like all the beaches here they put the sand so far out that the breakers crash pretty far out. It’s just really susceptible to pretty impressive waves. Not quite big enough to surf on, but not quite small enough to enjoy either. Great (although a little windy). It's sandy with lots of facilities including hotels with bars, toilets and sunbeds. It's possible to rent sunbeds for the day. At the Sentido Unique Blue Resort, it's €30 for two sunbeds, and use of hotel facilities, and waiter service on the beach. This is perfect if you're visiting Heraklion for the day on a cruise (as we were). It's a only a 10 minute taxi ride from the port, costing about €20 euros each way. The airport runway is at the end of the which is perfect for plane spotters, but the planes are far enough away not to disturb you. We really like to come to this beach, as it is long and wide with a lot of space for many people to relax in peace without the stress of having 70000 people around on top of each other. However, I would say that it is relatively dangerous to swim in the sea especially if there's red flag because the waves are so strong and high and some rocky area around. So be careful! Also, you can watch many many planes departing here as it is right next to the airport which is a bonus for sure!!! Lovely which we had to ourselves 😁 we visited during the off-peak season. Absolutely perfect weather for us given the time of the year and that we are from the UK (so weather's generally not lovely). Given 4 stars due to everything being closed which was misrepresented on Google (I thought businesses would at least mention that their business were shut and update business hours). This wasn't a huge issue for us as we brought food, but no toilets were available at all. The worse part of the day was that there were no obvious signage to denote exits to/from the beach. Another thing and this isn't anything to do with the beach, but the buses decided not to come at all and we had to call a taxi. Speaking to the taxi driver this is a normal thing for buses to do in Crete! I would definitely come again, but only during the peak season. So beautiful and clear water.... excellent beach. A little crowded but not too bad. The best in my opinion near Heraklion. It has this bar - News Cafe - it is just sensational. The food is great, great music and the staff very kind. I can only highly recommend it.
