Steep narrow cobblestone alleys, carry some solid footwear. Medieval village that dates from about the 12th century,was left in ruins until the 60's when an association was created to reconstruct the village identically as it was before !! There is not much publicity about this amazing site,but it's worth the while to stop an have a little visit,it's nearly all free,the castle costs 9 euros and all the money goes to keeping up the restauration of the village!! We spent our holidays here. We learnt that the reconstruction was achieved by hundreds of volunteers from all over the world. That's quite remarkable et really astonishing !!! Though lack habitants, the night is just amazing. The stars surrounded us and we were so small. Appreciate a lot the works that all the contributors have done to restore the castle and hope the local government could spread more ressource to help. Beautiful, travel back in time! Love the little narrow alleys in the village, all in stone, the art "ateliers", very good time spent in Saint-Montan. Nice spot in a beautiful village entirely restored in the 70s and 80s. A good community of people living here who saved this ancient place worth a visit of you are in the area. A few nice restaurant, réservation suggested. Walk around the castle, see the beautiful stonehouses. Drove 45 minutes on a regular Wednesday in June. Arrived at 11:00 climbed the stairs just to find out the ticket office/billetery was closed. According to all posters and information they should have been open from 10:00 to 12:30!! Thanks for driving me there for nothing! One star. Well restored and in original condition. Good views.
