If you are in reasonable phisical condititon, you can climb up to the crater from the parking lot (approximately 1.5 hours), or take a cable car first and hike the rest of the way (20 minutes). Cable car is expensive but allows you to walk up to some really impressive peaks and still get back in time for cheap bus back to Catania. You can still see that crater is hot. We visited beginning of March 2022. We had normal shoes, it was windy - if you can, take trekking shoes, but in sport shoes there is no drama, however they will be full of rocks, a bit slippery. View was amazing, it was cold, so take hat, gloves,etc. Travelling with kids: Fantastic experience! My wife and I went there with our 5 years old daughter in early September 2022, and it was amazing. We took the funivia of course (30e adult, 23e for a child age 5), and then walked up for another 30-40mins, with making short breaks and taking pictures along the way. The walk is quite uphill, might not be easy when traveling with children, but we made it with no issues. We had only 3h in our tour. It was just enough to take the cable car (funivia) clime up, go down, and buy some delicious honey and butter. Funivia takes approx. 25-30mins in each direction with waiting in a queue - there were 6-8 people in front of us each time). The prices are pretty much the same at the funivia top departures gift-shop, and at the trucks selling butters, honey, etc. in Refugio parking (10e a jar). Wear combortable shoes and dress in layers - depending on the wind, it can be hot on sunny day and while hiking, or a bit chilly. Long pants, tennis shoes, a t-shirt and a blouse or a light jacket were ok for the nice day we had. 25.7 gut A must do trip! We started walking from rifugio sapienza and we didn't take cable car and it took a lot of time, I recommend to take cable car and then start hiking and enjoying.
