Castillo de Granadilla

Plasencia, Spain Castle

Top-rated.online cuts through the clutter, highlighting only the reviews that are most helpful, earn the most likes, or come from the most active contributors. It's worth climbing to the top of this castle. Besides the great views, the walkway around the tower made my heart skip once or twice with vertigo. Inside it is rather dark, so watch your steps. This castle and remodelled ancient villages is one of best free days out I have ever had out in Spain. Wonderful guided visits from tourist information. Stunning views of the lake, villages and mountain ranges from top of the village walls. Sad to see this amazing place abandoned, I can imagine how beautiful it has been in the past with a beautiful lake just outside the walls. Unfortunately Franco decided in 1965 that he wanted to flood this town to make a reservoir. People of the town had to leave their homes. Even though the town was not flooded in the end , the towns people couldn't go back to their homes. It took 10 years before any of the towns citizens got compensation for the loss of their homes, that was in 1975 the same year Franco died . In total in Spain was 500 villages flooded under Francos regime Amazing experience. Take some time to read about the history of the "lost pueblo" first and you'll not be disappointed. A truly moving experience. This Castle and Granadilla in general is an amazing village to visit, It is so so so beautiful. Great 3h program Is a nice place to go/see, but if you expect a ghost town, this is not the case! Most of the houses on the main streets are closed and used by the workers there! Fortunately you can visit the tower and this compensate a bit! Well preserved 15th-century tower with an unfortunately ugly modern crowning.
