A very unorthodox Catholic in Barnbach, Austria, St. Barbara's, was completely re-designed, both inside and out, including the grounds, by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, in 1987-’88. Father Zeck (the assigned priest at the time) wanted an entire revamping of the and the grounds and gave Hundertwasser free reign over the design. The result of his work that one sees here today, was obvious and controversial to all passersby. It is free to visit inside and there is free parking. Our tour director called this a 'Hidden Treasure' because many tours miss it, but it was easy enough to find and quite interesting to view. A beautiful, stunning little designed by the artistic genius Hundertwasser. I was overjoyed my Mum was able to take me to visit this little in the village of Barnbach. (20/06/25) There is so much attention to detail in the design. So many beautiful mosaic tiles capture your attention. Not only is the very ornate but there are arches full of mosaic and detail on the outside perimeters of the to take in. I was overjoyed. The inside interior is quite plain and understated apart from the beautiful stained glassed windows which are very colourful and full of detail. Barnbach is quite far out so this is not the easiest of places to get to. A hidden little gem. it's fine tourist attraction but I wouldn't make an extra trip for it A in Barnbarn, in Austria. It was interesting to learn about the church's history that it was redesigned by the austrian architect Wasserhundert . Hunderwasser was a really talented man, was able to add a joyful twist to even such a serious topic like a church. Symbols of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Judaism co-existing in peace in the same garden. Faboulous! Another Styrian gem... Incredible! Amazing place, easy to find Interesting architecture for a Catholic church. With subtle nods to other major worldwide beliefs. Contains beautiful cenotaph dedicated to locals lost in 2 world wars.
