To set clear expectations, what is this about? * It's a set of old carriages from a narrow track railway * There's a steam locomotive - but only during weekends. For us, it was a diesel engine. * The track is about 11km long and the runs it back and forth once. * There's a stop in between about halfway. * So, you have 5km ride, then about 20 minutes break, another 5km ride, another 20 minutes break, another 5km ride, another 20 minutes break - and then the final 5km ride. * On the train, you get served drinks (we took Schilcher Sturm, new wine from the Schilcher grape common in this part of Styria). You can get the drinks during the 20 minute breaks outside as well. * There are also deep fried donuts ("Krapfen") filled with jam available during the breaks. These were delicious. * Both drinks and donuts are rather expensive though. Here's now the most important clue though what this is about: there's a man walking through the train, pausing in each car to play his Styrian accordeon and sing typical folklore songs to it. The lyrics are in (Styrian) German dialect and are for example about the "Höllerhansl", which was some kind of esoteric healer in the region that claimed to be able to diagnose people based on looking at people's urine. The bottles of pee ("Flascherl") were what gave the its name. Most people on the do know the lyrics and will happily sing to the songs. Summary: This is basically a miniature folk festival - with the aim that you sing and chant, drink wine, eat a donut and generally have a good time and fun. If this sounds weird to you, stay away. Given that there are 3 breaks in between where it's expected that you disembark / embark quickly, this is something you may want to keep in mind if you are not very mobile. I thought it would be some kind of tour, showing old architecture and etc. But it happened to be a fun with lots of different drinks to choose and some fun interactions with workers, so when you want to have some fun, thats the right place to visit.
