The paltry remains of the medieval fortifications seen here were a part of the fortress that saved the local populace from Turkish raids, especially one in 1457. Possibly building upon a Byzantine initial structure, the Knights Hospitaler enhanced the fortress here to provide safety to the people of the region. People living in Southern Kos would seek refuge within it, just as those in the Central regions would rush to Antimacheia and the Northerners to the capital. Findings suggest it remained in use until the 17th century, perhaps as the base of s local garrison. Nevertheless, it was since left into disrepair and gradually fell into ruins. Its materials were probably used to erect newer constructs. The is wonderful, there is no ticket, so a short pause could be rewarding. Caution is mandatory as the place is unattended and in ruins. So lovely place, part of world history 😍😍 We visited Kefalos in August 2024 as we were doing a car day trip of Kos! We parked in the main car park in Kefalos and walked up to the castle. The is very much a ruin that has been left to ruin even more. There was no included information anywhere about the site, which is why I gave the 4 stars. The best thing about the is the from the top. Really beautiful and you can see for miles. Worth a quick visit if you're there, but i wouldn't go out of your way to see it! Located near the Marina, its well worth a visit to see the castle. My only recommendation to those who look after the would be some info signs explaining the history of the site Kefalos in general is missed by tourism because of city of Kos. Wrong. It is a typical small Greek village with local climate. Get there, spend some time, check phenomenal on the island from the castle. There are also local shops where you can buy local delicacy. There was alot of people struggling to find the path to the top! At the first fork in the path go right. Once you see the church with the wooden door stay on that level. There is a cut as shown in my video with the tiny tiny sign saying castle. At that one go up left. The path will become more clear as you go up. I wore crocs but some of the grey shiny stones were a tad slippy. Take water. And there is toilets up the way past the taverna you don't have to use the taverna loo. They are cash only and it is for customers only. Tolle Aussicht auf die Umgebung, auf der Spitze ein Mast und griechischer Flagge, nicht mehr viel zu sehen, am Zugang mehrere kleine Restaurants mit ebenfalls schöner Aussicht A lovely little trip up to the of Kefalos — well worth the 30-minute walk to the top of the hill. That part of the town really comes alive at night, so vivid and full of charm. Well, I'm afraid it's a waste of time. Apart from the nice there's not much to see. If you're in Kefalos anyway or if you're very much into history, have a look. If you're on the Kos town side, don't go for this ruin, just have a look at pictures others have taken for you; there are much better things to see in that part of the island. It's not a you can go in, more walk around and on top of (beware of the Wells on the top as you could fall in). We didn't book any excursion or have any guide so all knowledge of the was obtained through Google whilst visiting. An excellent point looking out to the Agean Sea. A good place for panoramic pictures with plenty of eateries just a very short distance walk. . The of Kefalos is located atop a hill, overlooking the sea. It's an excellent endpoint for a high-intensity run from the beach. Especially during early morning since the sun rises from that side. I'd give it 5 stars, but it's a tad run-down. Nevertheless, the is absolutely spectacular.
