Dogs are not allowed inside. if you overlook some west german propaganda here and there it is a quite authentic gdr experience. A great place to learn about everyday life in East Germany without nostalgic sugar coating. Great on life in the GDR and special exhibitions. It’s well curated and set in a former kindergarten. Staff are super friendly locals who can provide much advice on the town and love sharing insights and perspectives of their city. We went on a day trip from Berlin to Eisenhüttenstadt, and this little was on our way as we looked round the town (I can recommend stopping first by the tourist information to pick up a map of the town with a planned route round the points of interest). The itself is really well put together with lots of interesting everyday artifacts from the GDR. I was amazed by the collection and I'm sure they have a lot more objects in their archives. You can get a real sense of how people lived, from the good and bad sides. There was also an art exhibition on in one part of the museum. The is perhaps a little old fashioned, not so 'interactive' and thus maybe not so engaging for children. But the adults loved it! What we also loved was the warm welcome as we entered the museum. You can really tell that the staff live and breathe the museum, and are proud of it. Very interesting insights into everyday culture and living of the GDR. For 4€ totally recommended! Wonderful about the town of Eisenhüttenstadt and the concept of "new city" in the socialist state. The visit is highly recommended for anyone interested in art, architecture, history and urban planning. The deals with sensitive themes in a nuanced way, also rich in examples: the exhibition places Eisenhüttenstadt in the vast context of planned cities in Europe and includes the point of view of local inhabitants. German / English bilingual panels and captions are present. The staff are very kind; unfortunately, I speak very little German, but the personnel were still available to answer questions and give advice on what places to visit in Eisenhüttenstadt. A very good selection of everyday objects on display as well as some interesting audio/video. Truly a step back in time, if you are from that time/era.
