Luckily there are several information panels dotted around the providing more details about that part. I have visited many religious/monastic sites and this was is quite unique and usual hillside that reminded me of a hillfort. The is free to visit and there is a castle ruin within a short walking distance to make it worth the beautiful and scenic drive here. Good views too of the tidal mill, dating from the 600s. A tranquil and historic with some pleasant views over parts of Strangford Lough. There are information boards at various locations across the site. Entrance is free. Unfortunately the is not suitable for people with mobility issues because the paths are mainly grass and quite steep in places. Free car parking is available for approximately ten cars. The location is quite remote and the road to this both narrow and windy. In my opinion this place is worthwhile visiting if you have an interest in history. Short 2 minutes walk to the top. Lovely views. If it rained recently you may need proper boots. Just an incredible place of history and with a great visitor center as well! A very beautiful, quiet, peaceful place. Possibly the oldest tidal mill yet found. This is a remarkable and historic in a setting of great natural beauty. You can really feel the presence of the religious communities that lived here. There is an excellent exhibition of the history of the site, but check for opening times before you go if you want to see it. Otherwise, there are good information panels round the site. The Celtic Christians put their monasteries in beautiful but inaccessible places, and it is still not easy to get to along narrow and twisty country roads. May not be suitable for large vehicles such as motor homes, though I have been there in a coach before. Parking is also quite limited. If you are visiting, please respect the natural and spiritual serenity of the site. A hidden gem of ancient history with a world first of tidal energy use.
