Nice church to in the village A splendid site: an impressive, four-square keep with extensive bumps and hollows of a large bailey and defensive walls, in a delightful, pastoral setting. Our was made all the more memorable by meeting two members of the trust, Mike and his wife (sorry we did not learn your name), who were busily mowing and raking the hay of the motte; we learned a huge amount from them about the history of the castle, the trust and its work and the local community in which both are embedded. Thanks to both of you, it was a pleasure to meet you. The only potential issue with this idyllic site is a very car park. The keep is all that remains which has had some restoration to help preserve it for future generations. This site has an interesting story from the Civil War, but I won't tell you in case you go for yourselves. It's set in a beautiful spot which is perfect for picnics on sunny days, and even has lots of new picnic benches. But no bins, so please take your rubbish home as this place was spotlessly clean. There are no toilets and parking is limited to 4-5 cars in the newly laid carpark which is free to use and there is no entry fee which are both very rare these days. Lovely ruins to visit. Lloyds of history related too the civil war. Residents were parked in the car park so had to find a spot down the road which other residents were not keen on. Whoops! Worth a visit. and perfectly formed. I loved my and my impression of the work being done to maintain this tower and make it available to the public is that it's a labour of love. It's not very big but there is so much to see. So much interesting detail in all the panels and the big metal book you can read, at the gate before you go in. Go on, treat yourself and go and visit!
