La prima testimonianza storica che attesta la presenza di religiosi sul Venda risale al 1197; si tratta di un primo insediamento eremitico fondato dal monaco Adamo di Torreglia. Alla sua morte seguirono altre esperienze di vita ascetica da parte di monaci provenienti da Santa Giustina di Padova. All'inizio del Duecento esistevano due chiese: la più antica dedicata a San Michele (scomparsa alla metà del secolo) e quella fondata da due monaci benedettini dedicata a San Giovanni Battista. Il monastero acquisì sempre maggiore importanza e prestigio, grazie al sostegno e alle sovvenzioni dei nobili Maltraversi di Castelnuovo di Teolo. Dopo la metà del Trecento il monastero visse un periodo di crisi e nel 1380 il Vescovo di Padova decise di accorpare la comunità del Venda con i monaci Olivietani, nota congregazione benedettina aristocratica. L'unione diede nuovo slancio spirituale ed economico al monastero sul Venda, che fu ampliato nelle strutture ed acquisì vasti appezzamenti fondiari. L'esistenza del monastero si concluse nel 1771 quando la Repubblica di Venezia ne decretò la soppressione e fece trasferire i monaci, mettendo all'asta tutti i possedimenti che passarono in proprietà alla famiglia Erizzo. Gli edifici divennero luogo di riparo per i pastori e caddero rapidamente in rovina. Dell'imponente complesso del monastero di San Giovanni Battista del Venda sono ancora visibili parti della chiesa, la torre campanaria e la cripta, salvati dalla rovina grazie a recenti interventi di restauro. We did a treking from Castelnuovo, from Storica Trattoria alla Chiesa where we had lunch. It’s easy to find a way as you can just take the road on the right. Although the road is not busy at all and it’s below trees and next to vineyards it’s better when you are able to turn on forest walkway (at about half of the way). Very pleasant treking with birds signing and nice views. It took us an hour and it’s quite steep on some parts, but not too much. At the top you are almost at 600 m. It is nice because of the view and ruins are quite interesting but it is the way itself that makes the trip worth the effort. Not sure how to reach the top of Monte Venda as the area is surrounded with military fence. Beautiful and worth the visit!! It is located on top of a hill. The ruins are kept in good condition and the panorama from the monastery is just gorgeous. You get a good glimpse of the Colli Euganei and the hike to the top is totally worth it. To enter the site once you get to the main gate, there is a little door on the right hand side, thta has a latch to open. Luogo suggestivo da dove si può godere di un panorama fantastico. Facile da raggiungere da diversi sentieri principalmente dal n. 4 "Lorenzoni" ed anche dal n. 9 "Monte Venda". Sentieri più o meno impegnativi per escursionisti più o meno esperti. Sentieri che si intersecano anche con il n. 2 "Colli Euganei Centrali", buona camminata! Only come here on days with clear view. The ruin itself is quite boring. Bel sito interessante anche come panorama. Molto piacevole il sentiero per raggiungerlo Un luogo con una storia millenaria , la punta dell'isola Euganea, c'erano altre cose subito dietro l'eremo, purtroppo distrutte e sotterrate per farne una base militare e di guerra, pessimo l'uomo!
