Stag & Hounds

Wells, United Kingdom Pub

Top-rated.online cuts through the clutter, highlighting only the reviews that are most helpful, earn the most likes, or come from the most active contributors. Budget-friendly, but that's about the only flavour you'll find! This place is a bargain – and you get what you pay for. Think lukewarm enthusiasm, questionable cooking skills, and a side of awkward service. Clearly, a team with loads of potential, but in desperate need of a pub mentor (or a flavour transfusion). Let's break it down: The "Money first, drinks later" shuffle: We arrived parched after a three-hour drive, only to be greeted with a preemptive payment request before a single drop was poured. Shy waiting & the missing salsa mystery: Our waiter mumbled something barely audible and then vanished. As for my "oozy" mozzarella bites? Bone dry, with a side of fiery BBQ instead of the promised salsa. Oh, and if two microscopic rocket leaves count as a salad... then mission accomplished? The tale of two fish: My "large" hand-battered fish looked suspiciously like my partner's "small." Overcooked, sadly. The chips and spoonful of peas were passable, but nothing extraordinary. Look, we had a good time because we were celebrating family. But let's just say this place won't be on our recommendation list. As a former publican, I see a team with untapped potential. Get these folks trained up, add a dash of life, and maybe inject some actual flavour into the food. Then it might be a contender! We chose the lunch deal (lighter bite) with dessert for +£2.50 but were told there were no desserts so had to go for the starter. The main course would have looked better on a smaller plate as being a smaller portion, it therefore looked sparse. There was a token gesture of salad. We weren't offered any alternative dessert. Food was nice and service good. Nothing about the meal encourages us to return. I recently visited Stag & Hounds overall, it was an enjoyable experience! The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the steak and fries. The steak was incredibly fresh and cooked to perfection—juicy, flavorful, and exactly how I like it. The fries complemented the dish perfectly, making it a satisfying and hearty meal. The staff, they were friendly enough, but there’s room for improvement ) Overall, I’d recommend this pub for anyone craving a great steak and fries. It’s worth a visit. Decent good pub food, great price. A little quiet, as early Sunday evening. Great service and welcome from three lads on duty. Dogs welcome, even have a dog menu. Highly recommend for no fuss food that the kids will eat in a nice family friendly pub. After a lot of dodgy meals we decided to try one more time and all I can say is, wow! The food quality has gotten much better! We had actually asked the lovely bar man Lewis why it had gotten much better and he said he personally fired the old head chef "Simon" because as the new manager he needed to rid of the who don't give the stag 10/10! Can't wait to return! I loved it here, the food was amazing (highly recommend the tomato pasta) and so were the staff, I would like to give a quick mention to Kira and Jo, who went above and beyond to make sure my service was one to remember, although all of the were brilliant. The pub had a homey feel to it and the vibe was perfect. Highly recommend and will come again. New Landlords since Christmas have certainly turned this place around for the better!!! The whole place feels warm, welcoming and friendly. Nothing seems too much trouble, that goes for all the staff. Had afew things on the menu now, and it's definitely excellent value for money, never left the place hungry. Dogs welcome too!! They've even got alittle doggy menu, which our dogs lapped up. Lovely location, very clean establishment, my steak was seasoned and cooked to perfection, my only recommendation is the plate could have less garnishes, peas(could use some acidity and seasoning)and fries are more than enough. The hosts Tania and Marcus were lovely and exceed my expectations. Well done 👍.
