Great time at the Chateau. Really a very nice history. The was in French and Spanish but we received a written English presentation, so that was helpful. Beautiful interior. Property of Antoine d’Abbadie who was an astronomer and cartographer who lived in Ethiopia for 11 years. This was the home to he and his wife, Virginie. It has a classical and Moorish architectural style. The Jerusalem room, the library and the observatory were incredible to visit. The grounds, which are vast and overlook the sea, are exquisite. This is a must see for anyone who is interested in architecture, interior design, cartography and history. If you are not and do not speak French, then you will most likely not enjoy it. I did not see any restrictions to take photos. No guided tours in English, only handouts. It's a very interesting and cozy place. There is the possibility to get a guided group inside the building but an excursion is only in French language . The can provide you with a leaflet in English and Spanish as well. The excursion inside takes about 1 hour. As for me - it worth to anyway, even if you don't speak French. La visite commentée était très intéressante. Today, I visited the Château d'Abbadia, and what a day it was! Not only did I get to explore this stunning neo-Gothic marvel, but it was also the birthday of its illustrious creator, Antoine d'Abbadie. You'd think the staff would have rolled out the red carpet or at least put up a little sign saying, "Happy Birthday, Antoine!" Instead, it felt like I had stumbled into a tragic ode to a poor Irishman who built a and then got completely forgotten on his special day.As I wandered through the castle’s beautifully decorated rooms, I half-expected to find a cake hidden in the library or balloons floating in the observatory. But alas, no mention of the birthday boy anywhere! It was as if everyone had collectively decided that celebrating an explorer who mapped Ethiopia and promoted Basque culture was just too much effort. Maybe they thought he wouldn’t mind—after all, he spent years in the wilderness!I could almost hear Antoine’s ghost sighing in disappointment, "Is this how you celebrate an Irishman’s birthday? With silence and dusty books?" The only thing missing was a sad violin playing in the background. So here’s my advice: if you’re going to on January 3rd, bring your own cake and maybe a party hat. After all, even long departed explorers deserve a little birthday cheer! The site is wonderful and beautiful, clearly a lot of history has gone on here and the owners had a love for life. We got forced into a guided that we did not expect. Some online sources still say you can do a without a but this seems it is no longer possible. The presenter rushed from one room to another giving us no time to take photos or soak in the beauty of the place. Note, if you pay to go inside you also need to pay to go outside, go figure... Pay for the tour, it is in French but they have booklets in English that you can use to follow along. Most of the staff speak English and Spanish as well. We arrived late and just got to the gardens of the for 2,50€ each adult but nice anyway. Vraiment une superbe visite ! Le lieu est top, avec une superbe vue à la fois sur la mer et la montagne. Manon, notre guide, a été très intéressante, sympathique, et pleine d'humour et d'énergie :D Après le château, on est aussi très bien accueillis au bar pour prendre un verre au soleil ;) Bref, une visite d'1h30 à ne pas manquer si vous êtes dans le coin :) Je ne sais pas qui a décidé de construire un bunker devant le château, mais ça leur permet de facturer 2,5€ pour faire le extérieur du château, quand, il n'y a pas longtemps c'était gratuit. Tout est prétexte à faire payer (le problème ce n'est pas le montant, c'est le manque de principes)...J'adorais Abbadia, mon château préféré depuis que j'étais bébé, et faire payer la visite du château, je comprends tout à fait, mais je trouve ça tout bonnement infecte et contre productif de faire payer pour pouvoir l'admirer de l'extérieur...ça va certainement donner envie aux gens de se cultiver...J'ai eu la chance de le visiter quand l'administration respectait encore le public mais je ne pense pas y retourner maintenant que je vois quels énergumènes cupides s'en sont emparés.
