Very informative museum. I could have spent much longer, but had to leave. I horror of the massacre perpetrated in the name of La Revolution is beyond terrible. Our second visit to the Historial de la Vendée - especially to see the Osiris Egyptian exhibition - we were not disappointed! Lots of artifacts and information (not much in English though if you don’t speak French) The rest of the was very interesting too - with exhibitions about prehistoric times, the Middle Ages and the Vendée Wars Good visits for history buffs, and the Café was good too! Fun interactive where you can see the while history of mankind. There is an extra room for kids to play in and room for other exhibitions! 5 euro's to enter and it's worth it. Visited both the Historial and the Memorial, primarily to see the 2nd.World War exhibition, which we found interesting, seeing it from it's effect on the French people. The building is modern and striking and facilities good, but the cafe menu is limited out of season. We found the Memorial to the Vendee massacres very moving - the commentary to the video presentation is in various languages via headphones and the chapel is worth a visit. We always enjoy visiting. Superbe exhibitions. Went to see the Romano Galleo exhibition - brilliant displays of artifacts. Interactive and informative. Also a very good cafe. A wonderful which can be enjoyed even if French is not your first language. We've visited on several occasions - the childrens area and visiting exhibition were different. We spent over an hour in the childrens area (theme = the sea) . Plenty to do for both kids and adults. In the main there are areas taking you through the history of the Vendee, a number of which have narratives in other languages. The cafe offers good value, and you can borrow picnic blankets if the weather is good. There are extensive grounds, and a moving memorial nearby. This place is so glorious. Ive been coming here for 9 yrs. It's spacious, fascinating and wonderful. The staff are helpful but today was even more of an exception. We went without realising there were special activities. One of these was a falconry show. I can barely put into words how wonderful it was. My daughter who has autism would be too overwhelmed by large bird shows (for years I've wanted to take her to puy de fou but it's too much for her) but this show today was perfect. I approached the falconer after to that him and he was so kind ... Even gave my daughter a feather 🪶 from one of the eagles. Such a wonder afternoon This is potentially a great introduction to the Vendée's history but only if you're a fluent French speaker. Though we speak French at intermediate level, there was too much detailed and technical information in French only to digest easily. There were too many exhibitions simply consisting of panels of writing which you could have learned simply by reading a book. The panels followed no logical sequencing or numbering so impossible to follow the information. And of course, too many displays with broken bits of pottery - a pet hate.
