A timeless value in the Koronisia area, the welcome and service was of a high standard even though we had no reservation and it was a Sunday with a three-day holiday. We had grilled sardines, fried calamari, fried prawns and mullet opened in the middle cooked "pedal". The last three were truly incredible, the best tastes I've ever tasted. There is ample parking and the prices were reasonable. The tavern is situated on a island in the middle of Amvrakikos gulf. It is a hidden gem as well as this island! The food was very good, but I have only one objection: we ordered the famous Amvrakikos' giant shrimps with red sauce and cheese and there were only 3 of them on the dish with a few ones!! It is also best to go for dinner after 8.30 pm or so because the sun is quite strong earlier and since it is setting at that hour there is not enough shadow outside. The sun set is wonderful though! Also, the name of the tavern is Myrtiria" but the name of the owner is Panteras! Don't get mixed up! One of the best tavernas in Greece. Amazing dishes, very friendly staff, unique location. This afternoon we had another superb meal of perfectly cooked local and seafood at this family-run taverna by the sea. We started with a salad of lettuce, fresh and sun dried tomatoes, little capers, chopped spring onions, fresh dill, balsamic vinegar dressing and - the star ingredient - tender smoked eel. Then on to grilled prawns and finally some wonderful grilled local fish: we didn’t catch its name but it was a bit like a very light mackerel. All washed down with a half kilo of rosé wine which was quite sweet but had good depth. We were the only diners on this wet and rather stormy afternoon, so my 4 stars for atmosphere are a bit unusual, but still warranted. We were welcomed and served quickly, and we loved sitting and looking at the dramatic weather outside. Koronisia is a special place at any time of year; a village all on its own in the middle of the beautiful wetland lagoon of the Amvrakias Gulf. You drive there along the straightest of roads next to a canal, past groves of citrus and kiwi fruit, through tall stands of waving bamboo and reeds, and then suddenly onto a narrow causeway across the centre of the gulf. It’s often lapped by waves. It takes you past sandy beaches and blue fishermen’s huts with wooden traps, all against the backdrop of the distant mountains. And finally to the islet of Koronisia with its very beautiful and well restored 11th century Byzantine church. In some ways this place is the middle of nowhere, yet the village streets have plenty of houses that are clearly well looked after, and the harbour and kite surfers’ beach still have a few yachts and campervans even in autumn. One of those places that deserves a great review, and yet you want to keep it a secret… To be completely honest we came here on a good Friday in the easter period, the place was crowded and it took 1h30 to be served so the 5 Star are for the food and the kindness of the staff who were overwhelmed. It may need a detour, but is worth every km you need to drive to reach Koronisia which is a dead end about 25 km south of Arta. The food is marvelous. There are no words to describe the big shrimps (Gambari) fished locally. Kefalos grilled open is a must. Whatever we have tasted in our many visits was good. When in the area, we always make the detour. Highly recommended. This restaurant has to be one of the best restaurants in this region, we ate here twice and the flavours created by expert cooking were simply devine. We have never tasted prawns as delicious before . Everything the owner (who is also the chef) cooked for us was superb and we would make a huge detour just to dine here again. Highly recommend also the salad with the smoked eel. Great spot to have dinner and enjoy the sunset. The view is amazing. All the plates were delicious even the tomato salad! Since we visited the place out of season, we didn't know if there would be a place for dinner, but the owner of the restaurant stayed especially for us and welcomed us with extremely delicious food. Also, the restaurant has a wonderful view of the bay. We are very grateful! I am so happy we found this paradise. The people in this restaurant are helpful, lively incredible at everything they do. I must say, I have officially ate the best shrimp of my life today in this location. I am definitely eager to return.
