Incredible rock formations, overlooking extensive views. It was overcast even I visited and I could still see to Roseberry Topping and Middlesbrough, on a clear day I'm sure the would be even better. Walked from Clay Bank Parking, which started with a on the footpath leading up the hill, but once at the top, it was an easy to the Wainstones. Heading west on the Cleveland Way, the rocks are hidden in a dip until you're quite close, but don't give up, they're amazing once you get there! Great place for walkers and climbers. Marvellous, worth exploring. Pro tip: through the forest path below in one direction so you make it a circular walk. This is a fabulous place, to the top but the paths are excellent. A little scrambled through the stones themselves but nothing dangerous and it's clearly marked out. Our little spaniel managed it too . Kept her on the lead through the heathers as there were lots of beautiful nesting red grouse. Car park at the start with plenty of room in the paying one and a few spaces opposite that are free if you are lucky. It is such a beautiful place with spectacular views, so I'm so happy to have this place 15 minutes from my doorstep Simply stunning, and easily accessible for younger walkers as well. We walked from Clay Bank - a uphill to start with but then a flatter along the top to reach the Wainstones, where you can stop and enjoy across the Cleveland Plain on one side, and into Bilsdale and the moors on the other. My boys enjoyed climbing around, hide and seek on the rocks etc. and the rocks allow for a fun bit of scrambling around. We visited on a beautiful sunny day and had the place to ourselves! Been meaning to here for some time. Having returned to the northeast after 35 years it was great to take my youngest climbing up The Wainstones. Getting there was easy. There many routes but 2 main routes from the Clay Bank car park just south of Great Broughton. The rude approach which is to ascend by the rocky path then along the too - it really does have a rude start. Then other is to along the edge and though through the woods just north of and under the escarpment then a less arduous at the end. We took the latter up and for former down. Good decision but I’d avoid the lower route if it’s been raining a lot as it’ll be boggy. Climbing the main wall between the Bilsdale Buttress and the Garfit Buttress it was challenging enough for her to enjoy it but not so challenging it was impossible. Having seen how many climbs are there, it’d take us a long time to complete and there’s something for everyone - Scrambles to very difficult climbs. Would we go back - like every other weekend Would I recommend. Yeah. It’s good for every level. The were spectacular, a lovely walk, well worth it. A cold morning! Circular doing the steps up and forest path back, beautiful! Absolutely stunning - trek to get there - I parked at the clay bank car park and did a 15km around the moors afterwards - I’d imagine it’s very slippy in the wet so boots a must. We always park at Carlton bank and the 4 miles to this heavy rocked area. The kids love to play hide and seek. I think you can go rock climbing here or it maybe just peoples hobbies not 100%. I’ve never done it myself but it looks like an excellent cycle path covering the whole of Cleveland way that will have to be my next challenge for them. Great amazing very much enjoyed myself Great out on the Cleveland way, hardly a soul around and great weather for October. Wonderful and well worth the climb. Walking shoes etc are strongly recommended because of the uneven yet well maintained path. Often very windy with little shelter and properly cold in winter.. Keep kids close because of cliff edge! Paths below the hilly bits (ie to the north) are sheltered by the trees and more gentle on the muscles but it can get VERY muddy - you have been warned! Ok this is a pretty and it took about an hour to with a couple of stops for a few minutes. Someday much younger and fitter could probably do it a lot quicker! However, the on thecway up and from the top were worth the effort. Not forgetting the interesting rock formation at the top. Good place for rock climbing and a nice only 30 minutes to get the Breathtaking I was one of a group who went for brunch on 14.10.25. There was adequate room to accommodate 9 of us despite it being busy. The food we had was great and value for money. The interior was great and staff were very good with us.
