If you are planning to visit more archaeological sites in the area, choose the ticket that costs 15 € and includes the Archaeological Museum of Mycenae, Archaeological Museum of Nafplio, Asini, Byzantine Museum of Argolida, Mycenae, Tiryns, Palamidi Fortress. This is a wonderful location to combine sightseeing with a swim, a meal, and then a refreshment. The site dates at least as far back as the bronze age, as it is mentioned in the Iliad. Few remnants of masonry from this period can be seen at the base of the western walls. Continuous use throughout antiquity and the Middle Ages is evident by the existence of varying types of ancient masonry on many parts of the walls and of many reconstructions upon these during medieval times. Where the huge ancient blocks stop, mortar bound smaller rocks continue the ascent of the walls. In some parts the ancient stonework has been reinforced by mortar additions. The Eastern tower, surviving almost at full height from the Hellenistic period, is spectacular. It is easy to access and quite manageable to walk through even with slippers, though enjoying the rocky edges of the southern side might be tricky in the latter case. There are beaches, taverns, and cafés in the immediate vicinity. Asine, already cited within the Catalogue of Ships by Homer, this Late Helladic stronghold is one of the most stunning location where the Mycenaean civilisation thrived. Not much remains of this once powerful city, just a few meters of its once cylopic walls, and a few cisterns dating back to the Hellenistic period. On its southern flank a few stretches of wall also point to its Roman time, when baths were built there. Walking down the path you will also see the remains of pillboxes and platforms where the Italian occupiers installed antiaircraft guns. Much of the destruction of the site, excavated by the Swedish archaeologists in the early twenties of the XX century, is due to the construction of trenches and wartime fortifications by the Italians. Once more a crude reminder of the tragedy of war on the heritage of such a beautiful country. This was an amazing experience because it wasn’t too treacherous of a climb, the views at the top are phenomenal and because I’m under twenty five the lady gave me free entry. I had an amazing time and would definitely love to experience this walk should I ever return! Lovely place. Visit if you're near. Not much to see from ruins, but still worth it. (during ww2 occupation Italians practically destroyed what had been excavated by then). Great views from top. Good shoes will be helpful. Small lagoon at the bottom is great for swimming. We came here today and paid € 5 euros for the view and a tiny "exhibit" in a cave. I don't understand the positive reviews. The people working there were very nice btw.
